TIGman 2,006 #1 Posted December 20, 2016 (edited) Brought the 54" blade into the shop this morning for a little TLC before I start using it for snow plowing duty. Just above the wear plate it is rotted out and in need of patch. Will have to get ahold of this welder guy I know..... Will post more photos when done. Ed Kennell 38,021 #4 Posted December 20, 2016 If you can't find a certified welder, a couple pints of JB would make that blade pass for NOS.
Sarge 3,463 #5 Posted December 20, 2016 That's amazingly rotted , wonder if it had been coated with ice/salt before storing or something ? My 56" was pretty bad , hence welding a new 1055 edge on it , but a lot better than that one...lol . I want to see what's behind the cutting edge.... TIGman 2,006 #7 Posted December 21, 2016 Making some steady progress on the blade refurbishment. Have the patch tacked into place. Have to finish welding and then make up new wear/cutting edge.
Sarge 3,463 #8 Posted December 21, 2016 I had considered doing mine that way - except replacing the box section on the back since it's so thin and weak in my opinion . I'd bet a chunk of 1/4"x 3" channel would work great and help reinforce it better . I did re-weld along the top edge of my 56" as it was allowing water to enter and rust out the channel and blade facing from the back side . I left a couple spots along the bottom to allow any water to drain out too . When I was inspecting the blade and figuring out the cutting edge material list I took an air nozzle to that channel and was floored how much crap came out of there since they only lightly stitch welded the thing onto the back of the blade - bad idea at least along the top edge as dirt/water gets in pretty easily . Might want to check yours closely... Repair looks great , btw . I'll probably cut that whole bottom off mine if/when the 1055 edge wears out and replace it except the frame . Got a fab shop near here that can roll metal pretty thick - I think they can do 3/16 x 60" max . Sarge
Tankman 3,518 #9 Posted December 22, 2016 So far looks good. ! always change wear plate bolts to stainless with Never-Seeze on the threads. When parked, blade down on wood blocks and the blade top edge sprayed with PB Blaster or WD-40 (water displacement).
TIGman 2,006 #10 Posted December 23, 2016 54" blade almost complete on the refurb. . Made some progress on it. Have to attach new wear edge and reassemble and it will be ready to go on the 1054.
JC 1965 1,530 #11 Posted December 23, 2016 WOW !! That looks great. I wouldn't have thought that blade could ever look that good again.
