Another 4x4 is born

...well I've thought about it!

 

It's a about three years since I created C4 and two since Bendy was nearly finished. It's about time I did my third conversion, so here's the build thread. This one is going to be a slow burner, so don't get too excited

 

Here's the main bit...  

 

 

 

there's quite a bit of work in order to get to a rolling chassis on this one, here's a few more pics

 

 

 

1/2 thick plate steel - laser cut and $10 each. Much easier than using a cutting disc

 

 

and my template for a wheel adapter.

same axle as Project C4, from an MTD all wheel steer. Taken three years to acquire another one, they are not plentiful. The last one Diggerjames took for his 6x6.

 

Propshaft from the rear will be the preferred method, just waiting for the right bits to show up on that auction site...

What size is that little input shaft ? MTD is known for building interesting parts like , only to use very lightweight/small components . I also wonder about the size/strength of the internals and drive axle halfshaft sizes...

Might want to look into small , lightweight solid axle 4x4's , like the Jimny , Samurai , Sidekick...ect . If you could find a Sami , not hard at all to customize the axle lengths and they would be plenty strong enough for a 4x4 all wheel steer tractor if you wanted ...plus locking hubs as a possibility . Or , go full force with Toyota 8" solid axles - let's see you hurt one of those...lol . My old Land Cruiser uses 9.5" diffs , so there's another beastly axle that's far stronger than even Rover's best design if you like - got my wheels spinning now on what to build...

The axle ratio is 28:1, so incredibly low geared. Half shafts and uj's are up to the job, though the weakest point. 

 

Ive been running the same axle on C4 for three years now and that has had some serious abuse. It's the rear wh transmission that's groaning on that as the front drive is taken from the brakeshaft...

 

all this said... I will be testing hard and if I break something I'll go large! I have been looking at small 4x4 axles for years but they are just a little large and dont scale well

Stock Samurai front diffs are 7.5" , so pretty small and the axle housings aren't much larger than what you're working with . Also , the 2 range transfer case in those little utes is a divorced type behind the transmission with a simple short driveshaft between the two . That case , stood vertically (you'd have to address moving the vent and fill points) would probably fit inside your frame rails . I've always wanted to find a beat up old stock Sami and build a home brew tractor that 4wd and would take a serious beating - those little utes are about the pluckiest thing ever built and spending some time on the various forums will show what they capable of doing .

I built Weber DGV series carbs for high angle use on these things for years - sent them all over the world and quite a few to the UK...

Dug out the rear axle, a 4 speed with independent drum brakes. I think it came from a Toro walk behind.

I also think I might have to split it and take a look as there's no reverse

 

 

it it matches the track of the front axle nicely

Its been a while, still waiting... I'm still brewing a set of plans myself, I have a feeling its gonna involve some big tires like this build, maybe some 26x12x12s all around... cant wait to see what this horse will look like....

Like I said.... slow burner... a few bits turned up over the last month on that auction site. A few hundred quid later, 300 miles, a hotel stay, etc I came home with this lot!

 

 

The idea being I need to design a drop box between the rear and front axle. Plan A was a right angle box, but then I thought I could go more compact and get the gearing in with a small peerless box. 

 

Heres a dry run of the current thoughts.

 

 

I need to get a rear rear axle on the bench to look how things might join up and fit a little better....
