Junkers88 68 #1 Posted November 14, 2016 Ok I've gotten a little farther on the B80 but not far enough to start mowing. Tried to move it today and the big part under the seat, I'm guessing the rear end, is making a grinding noise. I didn't get it to move more than a foot before the noise started and I stopped it. It does roll freely in neutral if that helps at all. I filled it with 80-140 gear oil before I tried it and am hoping that it's just a little stiff in there from sitting for a decade plus. Any help would be appreciated. I do not have the ability right now to get it on a lift and pull it apart. Richard.

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,104 #3 Posted November 14, 2016 Might be worth removing the drive belt guard and see how smooth the bearing is in the idler pulley. If it is OK run it again with the belt guard off. Start the motor with the transmission in a gear because you can't shift into a gear with the guard off with the engine running. The drive belt can make quite a noise if it is close to the guard. Usually repositioning the guard will eliminate that noise. Garry
stevasaurus 22,882 #4 Posted November 14, 2016 (edited) Not knowing what is wrong, I don't think I would start it in gear first. Like Garry said take the belt guard off, but start it in neutral first. If you still have the grinding, shut it off and we can check it out without starting it in gear. Remember, do not shift without the belt guard on. Here is a better way to trouble shoot your transmission without doing further damage. 1. can you push the horse around with the trans in neutral? 2. can you push the horse around with the trans in gear? Now put the rear end of the horse on blocks, take off the belt guard and drive belt. 3. when you shift gears, does the shifter feel like you are moving the shift forks into the gears? 4. with the trans in neutral, turn one of the tires in any direction. does the other tire turn in the opposite direction? Do the same with the other tire. Should be smooth and quiet. 5. with the trans in neutral, turn both tires in the same direction. Is the brake shaft turning now? It should turn now. Let us know what you find. Edited November 16, 2016 by stevasaurus
Junkers88 68 #5 Posted November 15, 2016 Thanks folks! To answer one of the questions the fluid that came out was almost entirely water with a thin line of oil on top. I'll try the rest tomorrow if I can before we head out on vacation. Richard.

There are three things that I truly dislike and have learned to dislike them more as I've grown older. 1) Large cities. 2) Large crowds. 3) Drunk people rather individually or in groups. Needless to say but Vegas covered each of those bases in spades. Richard.
