Kohler M12S Magnum 12hp info?

Recommended Posts

TIGman

Wondered if I could get some information about the Kohler M12S Magnum 12hp engine that came along with the C-120 I picked up back in July.

Year of manufacture? What model tractor it was used on? etc,....

Thank you !!

The M12-471527 was used in 17 models/years

1987 - 1997 models 312-8

1987 model 312-A

1990 model 312-H

You can find this here

https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro

Open the "Advanced Search"

Click on the "Engine/Motor Model red Lookup.

A 3-page list will come up. Look for the M12-471527 and click on it. That will place in the correct box.

Then click on "Submit"

To date the Kohler engines the info is in the front of the Kohler service manuals. That page has been copied and put into it's own file

You don't have to download the file. Just click on the screen shot of the page and it will enlarge.

Thank you!! Very much guys for the info.:)

My idea is to put the Magnum on the C-120 while I have the original

motor rebuilt by a friend.

Tigman,

Engine swaps are common in the WH world.I have a Kohler 341 on my 520h until I can get the Onan gone through.Just for your info the  M has an ignition that requires the control module be grounded at shutoff as opposed to the K which breaks contact to the points.

If this is something you already are aware of my bad.If not the ignition switchs are definitely different between the two.Nothing that can't be worked around if you know.

Thank you!! JA for the information. :handgestures-thumbupright:

I did not know that, Thanks for the heads up.

Fortunately the engine has the dash panel, control cables, ignition switch etc with it.

I should take some before and after photos of the engine swap.

Here are a couple of wiring diagrams that will show the differences, not too much needs to be changed. the first is your "K" and the second is the "M"

When I get out of work today will see if I  can start swapping engines. Told my foreman I sure will be using the chain fall, that Magnum is a heavy beast....

i read in manual i think or service manual on magnums. serial first 2 number will tell year of manufacturing. magnums started with serials beginning with 15 in 85. thats a 16 so it would be a 1986

True the engine was manufactured in 1986 but it landed on a 1987 model tractor.

The 1987 model tractors would have been released in October of 1986 just like the auto manufacturers do today. That way they end up with two selling seasons - fall and spring. With their fiscal 4th quarter ending in September it keeps the model years separated.
