37" Deck vs 42" Deck Mule Drive Pulleys

Hi All I have taken the advise not to keep posting on my 4 page post called M12 K301.

I just purchased a 42" deck pictures later. I have a 37" deck with a bagger system. I think I have two V type pulleys on my mule drive. I remember one of you guys told me that the 42 and 60 use a v and a flat on the muel, and my drive belt is a six sided special belt. I have purchased 8" spindles, rims, and tires so if the wheels hit the deck at lock I will install the 42"

The next version of the 37" deck used a standard 4-sided v-belt so one mule pulley will be flat.

Great manual thanks, How do I find out what year and version that I have?

The 37" should be 05-37SC-01 Ser# 11805

The 42" all that I know from last owner is a 05-42MS-0?  It has a one piece pulley cover the 05 has two covers

Do I need a flat pulley on my mule for my 42" deck?

If so do people just look for the pulley or the whole mule?

Will guess your 05-37SC01 is a 1989 model. If there is a 4-digit build date stamped on the ID decal that would date it.

Yes you will need a flat idler on the mule for the 42" deck. Since the idler bearings are the only thing that usually fail I would get a replacement V-idler and that would leave you with a spare flat idler.

Keep track of the spacers - 5/8" between the pulleys and 1/2" between the outside pulley and cover.

Thanks Gary, That will help a lot. I,m glad they are still in stock. I tried installing my 8" spindles tonight. They are too short to get the flat washer and e-clip on. I will try to grind the flat washer down about .015

Here are some pics of my 42" deck i bought this weekend. How can I find out what it is. It has a single pulley cover it measures 40" across the the blade tips and 48" OAL with 3 14" blades.

This is the first deck that looks like your's.

The differences in those models that followed may be the spindle assemblies that were used. Use this chart to try for a positive ID

Thanks, I do have the rest of the attachment assembly. You have to take it off to get the pulley cover off. I have printed out the spindle chart very nice. The problem is that Dave built this deck for me out of spare parts and he did

a good job blades, belts and all, but I don't think that they were the original spindles that were on it. Do the spindles have any stamped numbers or is this just a visual ID. Do they all look different? Some day I want a C-160 with hydraulics like he

had. I guess that would be the auto only with the Eaton 1100. I like my horse just as much as my Honda scooters.The spindles I bought on Ebay were short and only work with the top spindle washer missing. I bought some spindles from Dave and a flat pulley.

They will be here today.

I noticed that the flat pulley on some pictures I have seen is on the outside and either no or different spacers. My 37" has a 3/4 in the middle and a 5/8 on the outside.

If my deck is the 5-1011 and my spindles are the K series, which pulleys do I need. I used the drawing and BOM that you sent me but like you said it shows 42 and 48 parts.

This one is not too hard to figure out as to what is used on the 42" and the 48" decks shown on the TIPL.

Notice at the end of the parts list on the last page there is a 2nd set of item numbers 1 to 120. Among those are the blades for the 48" deck so the last 1 to 120 are for the 48" deck.

The first 1 to 120 are for the 42" deck.

All other item numbers not in the 1 to 120 are common to both sizes of deck.

 

The deck should fit your tractor as the 1975 model C-Series and the 312-8 are both long frame tractors which is determined by the wheelbase.

Thanks Garry I see it now when I printed this doc it printed on the front and back and I did not notice that matrix of numbers on the left was a legal size format, too long to fit the 11" normal sheet. The next question is how do i get the new replacement numbers for those old 1975 WH numbers. I have a bad outside pulley with a hole in the flange. I did finally get a chance to read my deck manuals and assume that the same spacers go on my mule for the 37" deck as for the 42" I did see that the flat idler goes on the outside. 1) Do you use the same decks for manual and hydro lift mowers.

2) Lift rod is connected to the rear hole in the lift arm and in the lift lever is that correct?

3) Are the other holes for snow blades and blowers.

4) My lift lever only has a up or down condition with a 9" pull back before any weight is felt is this correct? You would think that it would have a few height adjustments.

5) On my 42" deck i need to repair the sheet metal that looks like a 3 is about 3" high and encompasses the three blades. What is that called? Can you buy new ones? Is it welded or can it be brazed with a set of torches.

6) My 89 has the interlock indicator lights what years and series had this?

Sorry for all the questions, I am reading and trying to answer my silly question. The more i read the more i need ta ask question.

I mowed the yard Sat with the 8" wheels worked fine but very close in the LH locked position but not done very often.

Hi All, I removed the deck wheels and noticed that the steel bushings are worn by about .050 to .100 the wheel spindles are .500 in dia. an I press out those bushings and replcthem?

My spindles have gresse fittings and according to the info I found they are suppose to be k series which are not greasable what is up? One of the lift brackets must be stripped notice the different bolts.

Hi All,

Can I remove the bearings from a V pulley idler p/n 111170 I think they are 6203's Are they crimped over or rolled over with a metal lip.

If so can you use a dremel tool and make 5 cuts and pry the metal up and then replace the bearings. These are 60.00 each has anybody figured out a way to do this.

I have access to a lath at work.

Just bought two Stens 280-287 from Ebay 36.00 shipped

Well the bushings in the old pulleys needed a hydraulic press to remove. These bearings are metric for some reason, 17 x 40 x 12 and the bushing is .669 dia that presses in the bearing then .812 larger dia with a .376 dia hole.

They are a lot cheaper than OEM but a lot of work to make fit the application. I was told that the Stens V is not the same as the WH V so I hope it does not eat my belt. One of my old pulleys was rough feeling to spin and the other was not. I think that one of the idlers have more stress on it then the other.
