nickj21 20 #1 Posted September 23, 2016 My k301 12 horse seems to run very very hot...melts the new paint on my hood from the stack. What could cause this. Did not do it before. Any advice is appreciated. Does not get quite to red hot though... but very hot from the head too..thanks in advance!!
Shynon 7,470 #2 Posted September 23, 2016 I would change the pipe coming out of the block. I use a short nipple, then a 45 and then another about 4" piece of pipe. I don't think you are running too hot, your just too close to the hood with a single walled pipe.

Is it getting good air flow across the head; could be a mouse has built a nest blocking air flow. Is the exhaust stack new; too close as suggested by Shynon. Did you change the carburetor; if so it could be running too lean. Did you change the points; could be timing too far advanced. Let us know what changed prior to the heat problem.

No stack is not new. And i did reset points to .020. What would i have to change for it to be right? I had the head off for a head gasket replacement. And i didnt see anything from mice.
rmaynard 15,698 #5 Posted September 23, 2016 Adjust the carburetor until you are running a bit more rich. Running lean as Richard said can cause the engine to run too hot.
