Rj58 vs. Suburban 400 transmission guts ?

Recommended Posts

I know that the three piece cases have different side panels for the Rj58 versus the Suburbans, but is there a difference in the gears ?   Are the gears interchangeable ?    I'm trying to make one good transmission out of two that have problems.

  Thanks,  Jim

I remembered seeing that thread months ago, but couldn't kind it again.  Thanks for the big help.   I have the Rj59 trans apart, but didn't want to dig into the Suburban one until I had more info.

Thanks,  Jim

Jim, the transmissions are identical except for the left side plate. The only difference in that plate is the tab that the brake band bolts to. You can see that in the thread. All the internal gears, center case and right side plate are identical. Download this manual. Section 1 is for the 5003 (RJ) and 5010 (Suburban) transmissions. :)

Here's the list of seals you need.

I would suggest that you completely dissemble both transmissions and inspect everything. Check the inner teeth of the 3523 gear (item #12) and the 3522 input gear (item #10). That's a weak spot. Replace bearings as needed as well as the bronze bushings at the axle ends and differential and install new seals. I prefer to install the seals after the transmission is back together. Use common sense care that all the shafts are free of any burrs before you slide them on. :)

Jim, you want to go through that thread for sure.  You may come into a few differences inside, but the stuff in one trans will work in the other.

1. the amount of teeth on the differential and mushroom gear in the 5003 may count different in the 5010.  They could also be the same.  If they are different, you would have to switch in pairs.

2.  the spline shaft and fork gears may also have a different number of teeth in one trans then the other.  Would have to switch in pairs then also.  They could also be the same.

This is just something to be aware of...it is not a problem.  Take some pictures and ask any questions.  :handgestures-thumbupright:
