Larry Chamberlain 16 #1 Posted August 21, 2016 Stuffing a 12 hp Kohler under the hood if my 8hp 4 speed wheel horse having trouble mounting the oil pan no room to drill the holes I need any suggestions thanks
Ed Kennell 39,162 #2 Posted August 21, 2016 The 12Hp pan should have tapped holes on the right side that fall on the frame. The clearance holes on the pan ears are not used on the right side.
daveoman1966 3,762 #3 Posted August 21, 2016 (edited) Use a 'J' bolt (3/8").. Hook the 'J' to the frame. Whgeelhorse uses these In some places. Edited August 21, 2016 by daveoman1966
N3PUY 1,031 #4 Posted August 21, 2016 Here's pics of 3 different tractors with 12HP motors. But there are pans that do not have the tapped holes in the bottom to put bolts from the bottom up. I found that out this summer !!!!!! If no tapped holes then use J-bolts.
Ed Kennell 39,162 #5 Posted August 21, 2016 I was not aware there are pans without the tapped mounting holes. But If I had one, I would make two angle brackets bolted to the frame and the ears on the pan. Just not a fan of J-bolts on cantilevered cast iron ears.
Larry Chamberlain 16 #6 Posted August 21, 2016 I can bolt the pan down no problem but can't close the hood I need to have the pan back against battery tray but can't drill the front two holes cause rid the tie rod mount

Yep.... made the motor transplant a little more difficult ... had to change pans.
Larry Chamberlain 16 #8 Posted August 21, 2016 I have the pan that has the tapped bottom holes
N3PUY 1,031 #9 Posted August 21, 2016 Modifying the hood may be easier than moving the motor. If you move the motor the belt will be shorter and the guard will need modified. And the PTO lever.
Larry Chamberlain 16 #10 Posted August 21, 2016 I bought a GT 40 side air cleaner for this project I believe Im gonna have to use it cut the side if the hood I will lol I just didn't wanna hack it up that all
N3PUY 1,031 #11 Posted August 21, 2016 I think it's a GT14 air filter. That's what is on my C101. The motor is off a Gravely .... probably why it didn't have the tapped holes. And the air cleaner is off a GT14. I wasn't sure if it was going to fit but it was perfect! ¼" clearance top and front. It will still be OK after the dent in the hood gets straightened.

R. L. Addison 299 #16 Posted January 16, 2017 I've never had any problems like that. Measure the hole distance from bolt lug on base to clutch side base to block. Maybe you can remove engine base and drill thebase>block hole through and it will match. I understand it has been done. Alternative is to try an "A" base engine.
