D series 56" blade question

Question for D series owners that have an original large dozer blade -

I have , what I believe is a model 6-1141 blade that has been pretty sadly abused . Whole frame was bent up pretty good and about have that done , making a whole new nose piece to replace the repaired (badly, many times) one now .

 

The original lift link with spring is missing and a solid welded tab is in it's place . I'd like to reproduce the original style but wonder how well it actually works due to the weight of the blade - and also whether or not it affects being able to use down pressure .

 

If this link actually works well and helps the blade to float a little , I"ll make one - which begs the question , does anyone have one that I can get a few dimensions from ??

I'm just really interested to see how well the originals design actually works in the real world - anyone have any input ?

I did get the lift link , interesting design to control down pressure and avoid damage to the blade/tractor....

 

That said - I spent several weeks rebuilding the blade's frame since it was severely bent up and twisted to boot -

 

 

 

 

 

The blade was also damaged/bent pretty badly - so , instead of being able to bolt a new cutting edge on it I had to weld the new one on instead . Metal is a pre-beveled 1055HC from Discount Steel .com - 1/2" x 3" high ...

 

 

 

No final pics yet , still have to make the cross pins for the rear mount , blade pivot and springs this week but it will be done . Trying to repair the damage done to the front axle as well , probably have to find a good used one and might upgrade to 1" while I'm at since 1 wheel is junk as well ....sigh .

All finished except making the skid shoes - trying to decide what style and type I want to run on it . Due to the heavy angle linkage assembly and those solid steel shafts it always wants to dip the right side edge down first so skids is a must or hang weight off the opposing side - the thing is heavy enough as it is ...

 

 

 

 

 

With the front axle upgrades - full bushing liners in the spindles , new bearings , new spindles , trailer hubs w/tapered roller bearings and new steering joints (most upgraded to heims) it steers quite well despite the soft ag treads on the BKT tires .Time will tell how the 1055HC steel on the cutting edge wears and I'll try to report back after putting some hours on it this winter and doing some dirt/gravel work .

Sarge I see you did some excellent reworking of the blade parts, idk what size the original skid shoes shank is but if it's 1" then there's all kinds to be had I have a Power King Economy blade I made fit to my Kioti it had 3/4" (which I may upgrade next year) they just won't adjust any lower factory , wish I was still in the machine shop at work for government jobs but changed shift/departments and don't get much chance to use the mills and lathes anymore, also years ago dad decided to use truck leaf springs for his blade scrape/cutting edges and they have worn very well,Jeff.

Both tubes for the blade were twisted and destroyed - the tubing I grabbed ended up being 7/8" inside when I though I had grabbed the 1" dom tubing....wrong steel pile , ugh . I'll end up making a pair or getting 2 of the smaller cup skids and adding my own shanks . TSC carries some , but they are 7" in diameter , scaled a little too big even for this huge blade .

Sarge I found several on eBay for 7/8" shank 4" shoe disc (for UTV plows) about $25-$40 pr hope this helps, I just went with the factory 3/4" to get it done this year and will probably upgrade next year,Jeff.

I've got a different design in mind I'd like to try - just need free time to get it going and test it out .

I will say this - that 56" with the 1055HC steel cutting edge works excellent - even good enough for ripping concrete and asphalt out of the ground ....oops .

Think I'm going to build a front guide to mount in the front quick attach so the big blade can't leverage against the rear axle so much when rolling material with the blade angled . The high curve in the blade works great , it still rolls the wet snow better than expected and way better than the 42" stock blades on the other machines .

 

Still on the fence a bit about using the stock spring loaded lift link - it does allow the blade to float nicely and puts a nice amount of loaded pressure for scraping on pavement without having to fight a solid link . A big credit to WH's engineer that designed it - simple and effective for sure . I can see some use for a more solid link and maybe I'll copy the design a bit but use a shorter/heavier gauge spring for grading work - this one moves too much for that type of cutting dirt and such .
