Powder coating wheel

Recommended Posts

Fun Engineer

So I tried to contact Martin about this but our message board says he cannot except messages.

I'm having a new powder coating company in town powder coat my wheels. This is new for them as they normally stick to ATV and snowmobile parts.

My question is this. How do you hang the wheels for powder coating?  Wire or Rod? And where do you attach it?

My other question  is it possible to get enough powder coating in the space where the wheel center and the rim are welded together?

Thanks for any assistance on this question.

Dave

I'm not an expert, Dave...But I believe my guy "hung" the rims with wire around the inside where the tube and tire would be.    He also mentioned that If he "charged" the piece correctly,  the powder would pretty much go and cover anywhere.   Don't know if this helps ..?

My fiance works for Keystone Koating here in PA and I have had a few rims powder coated. I have seen the inside of the plant and based on my experiences here are my observations.

They put a metal rod through one on the bolts holes on the rear rims and a rod through the axle hole in the front wheels and put wire hangers at the ends of the rod to hang them on the line. Now as far as the space where the center and rim are welded together that can be tricky. If the person takes their time usually you can build up enough powder that rust won't be an issue. If the powder is a little thin in that area and it gets wet you will see rust. Now I usually get a little bottle of touch up paint from them in case that happens and run the little brush around those little seams and that seems to address that problem.

Honestly since I don't have a sandblaster I hated prepping wheels for paint and this is just a great way to do wheels in my humble opinion, but that's just my :twocents-02cents:

Hope it works out for you!

My former powder coater used to stick a sturdy wire through the hole for the air valve. Always seemed to work on mine, and he usually got good coverage everywhere.

You can hang the wheels pretty much anyway you want.  I've done both, through the valve stem and around the wheel like a tube would be.

As far as getting into all of the little spaces, it's just like painting.  It all depends on the prep work, how much powder is sprayed and where.  Comes down to who is doing the work.
