Differences between 48 inch mower deck's.

Recommended Posts

So I recently acquired a C 120 that came with a 48 inch mower deck and a 42 inch mower deck.   The 48 inch is in pretty rough shape, so I have been using the 42 in the meantime.   I started to break down the 48 and decided that it is probably too far gone for me to rebuild… So I started looking at craigslist to find another.  As it turns out, there is one across town from a   Wheelhorse Workhorse 1848 model.  It's definitely a 48 inch deck, but it looks different then the one from my 120.  On my 120 deck, it is sort of scalloped along the rear shell of the deck, where the height adjustment wheels are… And you could stick your arm into the housing from the back if you wanted to, there's that much room.  Also, the 120 deck used to have baffles, but doesn't anymore due to corrosion and destruction  from the previous owner.  On the deck from the workhorse, it doesn't have baffles, but it also isn't scalloped on the rear edge of the deck, it just kind of goes down to the ground real close, like the does around the front side.

What I'm wondering is, I assume that this will bolt right up and work fine… But what is the practical difference between these two mower decks? Will this thing work for me, I'm sure that it will, but figured I should ask.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying but I can tell you that the attachments for the GT1848 and C-120 are interchangeable. Pictures? :)

Mike, we might throw out what we were chatting about earlier as well.  Did most decks NOT come with baffles?

And although I'm hesitant to say anything with certainty about Wheel Horse anymore surely if both were attach-a-matic compatible they will fit either or both of your tractors.

Not sure reading your description but, I have four 48" decks.

A noticeable difference, some 48" decks have 1/2" steel rod along the bottom perimeter of the deck. Some not.

Do you mean that the deck is a side discharge but also looks like a rear discharge?

Like this one?

Any deck with the same attaching mounts will work.

Do only "Recycler" decks have baffles?

Well, here's a couple pictures then. I should've just done this earlier..

Here's mine, the one that's beat up that has the scalloped rear edge:

And here's the one I'm looking to get.. maybe.

Does that help?

Mike

And they're both definitely side discharge. I didn't think they even made a RD 48" deck?

Don't see why they both wouldn't interchange.  The second one is more familiar to me.

I figured they'd both bolt up without issue, but if I have to scavenge parts from one for the other, which i suspect I will have, whats the difference, if anything? Basically, where would I put my effort? This one or that one?

The one you're looking at has the wheel adjust on the right, 42" deck w/ side discharge.

48" decks, wheel adjust is on the left side.

Far as I can tell, the 48 in " Workhorse 1848" means 48" deck came standard. Several sources I see online support that. Is this an oddball deck, but otherwise a workable 48" deck, I wonder? It sure LOOKED like 48" from where I stood, but I didn't have a tape measure on me when I was there.

I've assumed the same, that 1848 was 18hp48"...

PS, surely it is in better shape than the one you were considering refurbishing!

Yes and no Mike. That doesn't mean it was sold with a 48" though. Also, it's very likely not the original deck after over 30 years. Tankman is spot on about the adjuster. Either de,ck will work fine on either tractor. :)

48" decks have a reinforcement plate above the deck pan. The belt covers are secured to the lip of the plate by horizontal screws.

All the other decks have vertical bolts securing the belt covers to the deck pan.

The 48" deck was standard on the 1848 but also available was the 36" SD and RD and the 42" SD and RD. It may have been swapped out when new for a specific size and style.

I'm with you now fellows, and with that intel, it sure looks like a 42" in the pictures. The belt guards have been removed and all, and there's no reinforcement plate under the pulleys either. I'll look closer, with a measuring tape in hand, but yeah.. looks like the same size I already got. Thanks!
