2 inch trailer hitch mount, front wheel snap ring problem

Recommended Posts

beekay42

I have a 1976 wheel horse c-160 tractor. 1st question. I am looking for a trailer receiver hitch mount that connects to the tractor rear end.The oem one is not heavy enough. I want to tow my utility trailer that has a 2 inch ball.  I had talked to someone on this site that made these few years ago. Does any make these any more? I would like to purchase one. I'm also having trouble with my left front wheel snap ring popping off when I move the tractor, any remedies for this? Has anyone had this same issue? I thought about drilling it out and tapping it. Need suggestion please!

:WRS:       Here is a vendor for the hitch you want. As for the snap ring, Have you replaced it with a new one? Also, if you jack it up how much plat do you have on the left sode compared to the right?

the ring groove for your snapring may be worn enough that it won't stay

I appreciate the info. I have not replaced the snap ring. I do have more play in the left side. How much should there be?

Ordered one from Tom two days ago, he said he was going to fab a few up in the next couple of weeks. Good guy, and a great price.

Built like a safe,,,,,,,One good investment.....the tractor will break before the hitch goes anywhere.......

This should have been a factory option or accessory..

Tom is a very nice guy................I have 2 of these ......worth GOLD !!!!!

I think the snap rings have a flat side and the other side is beveled a little.  If so, the flat side should be out.  Replace the snap ring, and you might be able to clean up the groove with a hack saw...doesn't take much.  Drilling and tapping would be a last resort, but that does work...just ask my 702.  :)

The snap ring set up on the spindle was an under engineered boo boo. Too much is demanded of the spindles on a garden tractor for snap rings.

I have worked around the problem by drilling the spindles for cotter keys. Leave clearance for a washer and you're good to go.

If I remember correctly, there should be .015 clearance between the bearing and outside washer.

Yes .015 is correct.
