Al C. 1,428 #1 Posted July 18, 2016 I replaced the points and condenser on my 1967 T1067 Wheel Horse, just because they had never been replaced. Wow!!! What a difference. Runs much smoother and at much lower idle speed. More power too. Best $48 I've spent!
tunahead72 2,471 #2 Posted July 19, 2016 Genuine Kohler, or aftermarket? I'm just wondering because I'm thinking about replacing both on one of my tractors, and I know there's some debate about whether it matters any more.
Al C. 1,428 #3 Posted July 19, 2016 Genuine Kohler. The tractor is 50 years old. I figure, why try something new when the sure-thing parts are still available.
Mike'sHorseBarn 3,049 #4 Posted July 19, 2016 I have used both Kohler and aftermarket in my tractors and I haven't noticed a difference in how well they work. The last two sets that I got were at my local carquest auto parts dealer and they were PrimeLine brand. They were about half the price of the Kohler brand points and condenser. It's just a matter of personal preference and budget.

Ed Kennell 39,663 #6 Posted July 19, 2016 Best to use the timing mark on the flywheel and an ohm meter to set the points. If you use feelers instead, I have found the older Kohlers run better with points gap set 0.002" less than the manual.

Ed Kennell 39,663 #8 Posted July 19, 2016 Right Van, If I can't locate the timing mark, and I have to use feelers, I try to set mine so .017 goes and .019 no goes.

Thank you so much Ed. Is there a video floating around on how to set timing using the timing mark? I've not done that before but do want to learn how. pfrederi 18,128 #11 Posted July 19, 2016 Excuse me does anyone else think $48 for points and condenser is excessive??? OEM or not they aren't made out of precious metals.
oldredrider 2,553 #12 Posted July 20, 2016 for $48. I'd make my own points.

Al C. 1,428 #16 Posted July 20, 2016 Slow motion of new Kohler points gapped at 0.018 on a 1967 Wheel Horse K241 10hp engine. Purrs like a kitten. Starts on half a crank. IMG_6811.MOV
Wheel-N-It 2,969 #17 Posted July 20, 2016 RubyCon, thank you for steering us to that video. Much easier to set the timing than I thought. Al C. I am not able to download your video on my phone but will try later today on my laptop. Thank you!

tunahead72 2,471 #19 Posted July 21, 2016 ??? I got it to play last night on my laptop. I forget what software worked, but it was already installed on my machine. Engine sounded excellent, by the way, just the way I want mine to sound.
rmaynard 15,788 #20 Posted July 21, 2016 @Al C. you mentioned earlier that it now idles at a much slower speed. Be sure that the idle is not less than 1100 to 1200 RPM or you will not be lubricating the engine properly.

Al C. 1,428 #22 Posted July 21, 2016 Thanks for the note regarding the idle speed. How can I measure RPM's?
rmaynard 15,788 #23 Posted July 21, 2016 I sprung for a little infrared tachometer. A whopping $8.95 on Amazon. Now that was several years ago, and they have gone up in price, but they are still available at reasonable prices from many sources. Search this forum for "measuring engine speed" for more interesting stuff.
Al C. 1,428 #24 Posted July 21, 2016 (edited) I went over to Harbor Freight. They have an infrared photo tachometer for $39.99. It's a good bit more than Bob paid at Amazon, but it was worth the value of walking home with it. Both of my machines were idling high. I tuned them to 1200RPM idle. Wow, what a difference. It's like they whisper. I've attached a picture of the tach meter and the newly tuned fleet. Thanks everyone for the help. It's always a pleasure doing a project with my Wheel Horse buddies.
