Home made trailer

Hi all,

I've just finished building a trailer for my wheel horse, It was built almost entirely out of material I had lying around. As I'm sure is quite evident I am definitely not a woodworker But I think its come out quite well. I will be strengthening the tongue with angle section but in keeping with the theme of the project I would like to find this rather than buy it!

My only complaint about it is that it is very heavy! but other than that I am very happy with it and even got the chance to test it out the other day. I'd say I had about 200-250KG of bench vices, cast iron stuff, tool boxes and other 'under the bench' workshop items and it didn't complain at all (nor did the wheel horse for that matter)

I think I will attach some eyelets in strategic locations for securing stuff at a later date.

Thanks for looking

Callum :)

Callum  That looks very good. Way back when I was much younger and my father was alive, he built a trailer for his Commando 800. Every thing was built out of rough cut oak 2"x 4" 's. The base ,bed , sides and tongue , it was so heavy that it took 2 people to move by hand. The Commando would handle the trailer fully loaded. When questioned about why he used all the heavy timber to build the trailer his reply was "they were free , why spend money". Your trailer looks a whole lot nicer then his. I wish I had taken a picture.

Looks good....you can't beat FREE.       The right tire on the trailer is complaining a little though.   :bitch:  I need  some air.

Looks good Callum. Keep it dry and your trailer should last a long time.

wow! all oak, good job the wood was free! the main 'rails' are 3 x 3" fence post so its pretty heavy, 2 person lift i reckon. I got the axle in just the right spot so its almost perfectly balanced to keep the tongue weight down.

I'd have loved to see a picture of your Dad's trailer, do you still have the Commando?

thanks for the kind words

Haha yes it was, once I got moving it got worse too! I think it might have a slow puncture, I'll get some tubes at some point.

I would like to treat to bed with something, not sure what to use though really. Boiled linseed oil?

At the moment its outside but it will have a home in the new workshop

my dad has some 16 quater maybe i should make a trailer on that and go over the legal road limit:ychain:

my trailer sits lower to the ground and it has 2 axles so it's a pain to move.

how is the new workshop going?

workshop is currently nothing more than lines on paper at the moment! building is due to start on the 25 so currently everything is in the garage, I can still get at everything and have good workbench space but my wheel horse and trailer are outside! we've got some lovely weather at the moment so I'm not too bothered.

My trailer's quite low too, but with the one axle and being well balanced its easy to wheel about.

Any kind of sealer is going to help, or an oil based paint. Keeping it dry is still a priority, not so much for the timbers but for the plywood bed.
