RJ Hamner 1,011 #1 Posted July 16, 2016 My 1979 C-121 project is coming along pretty well....so far. Got it down to the bare frame (naked horse in my garage) degreased, got it down to bare metal, two coats of primer, sanded and first coat of red on this am thought I would start on the smaller parts first (a little too warm for the blast hood and long sleeves) rods, small plates and such. Got to the brake band and it and the drum look like someone has drained waste oil on them since 1979 and had collected all sorts of "stuff" The drum was no problem but the band has me a little worried. Is there a good way to de-grease it without destroying what I assume (yea I know) is a brake pad material?????
cleat 6,697 #2 Posted July 16, 2016 Brake cleaner should work fine. I then bead blast it, mask off the lining and paint with high temp black. Like new then (maybe better). I have never seen a brake lining worn out, just rusty like Wheel Horse never painted them in the first place.

wallfish 17,112 #4 Posted July 16, 2016 I soak them in gasoline overnight to get the oil that penetrated into it out. Probably a good idea to replace the trans seals. The brake shaft seal was probably leaking and that's what soaks them with oil.
953 nut 56,150 #5 Posted July 16, 2016 If you find that the brake lining will not clean up you can get new ones from @rmaynard, he is a vendor on this site.
