Elroy Heselton 3 #1 Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) I picked up a 4 speed transmission at the big show. It has 1'' axles and there is 2 1/2'' of axle showing between the hubs and the transmission housing, I'd like to know what this came out of. It is just a regular transmission case with 2 1/2'' of axle showing before the hubs. There is nothing different about it to see. A picture isn't going to show anything different. Achto 27,834 #2 Posted July 14, 2016 I'm not a tranny expert but there are a lot of guys on here that will be able to tell you what it is from a pic.
953 nut 55,966 #3 Posted July 15, 2016 Are there any numbers you can give us? And yes, pictures would be helpful.

Racinbob 11,260 #5 Posted July 15, 2016 A couple of pictures would help. There are variations in the 3&4 speed transmissions. Are the ends of axles flush with with the outside of the hubs? Pull the hubs off and measure how much axle sticks out. .
stevasaurus 22,884 #6 Posted July 15, 2016 (edited) If it is a 2 piece transmission case, it depends on where the brake drum shaft comes out. If it is the hole closest to the axle, it is a 3 speed unidrive...5007, 5025, etc. If the brake drum comes out the next hole toward the front of the transmission, it is a 4 speed unidrive...5080, etc. The bevel gear differential has 1 1/8" axles. Racinbob 11,260 #7 Posted July 15, 2016 I just wanted to lay an eyeball on it Steve. My second thought, after the hubs not being all the way on, was that he may have bought a 5045 for a 953. Aren't those axles longer? But....I think they are `1 1/8" so that would be out.
stevasaurus 22,884 #8 Posted July 15, 2016 Right Bob. You know what, I read it wrong. I thought he was talking about how much axle was sticking out, not how much axle he has showing between the hub and the axle. My bad. Everything I said above is correct for what I said, but he has a four speed transmission that has the longer axles like for the 1972 commando 800. The trans is a #5085. My tunnel vision would not have happened with a picture...not Elroy's fault. The fault is mine. Just getting old.
Elroy Heselton 3 #9 Posted July 15, 2016 This transmission does have the brake in the forward hole, 2'' axles, 2 1/2'' axle space between the hubs + transmission ends. Hubs are at the ends of the axles. Like Stevasaures said, the #5085 was used on the Commando 800 - 1972+1973 and on the Raider 12 -1974 . Was this a 4 pinion rear end? I want to thank you guys for all your help. This transmission is bolted to a Commando 8 short frame, Suburban front axle, fender- seat assy-653, B 60 steering + dash, home made frame to dash mount. 16x 6.50 -8 front tires, 23x10.50- 12 rears. I have to get a late 60's hood and a K321 engine. Thanks again Elroy
stevasaurus 22,884 #10 Posted July 16, 2016 Yes, it is a 4 pinion differential. How about some pictures of that horse when you get it together?? sounds interesting.
