Chantry 1 #1 Posted July 13, 2016 Hello. I have just acquired a 1974 Wheel Horse A800 Ranger - it looks like new and performs brilliantly save for a slight difficulty in engaging any gears as it grinds a bit and unless one has a foot on the brake it starts to creep forward. It didn't come with an owners manual and therefore I am not sure how to rectify the problem - any clues on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated likewise any advice on qwhere to find an owner manual and parts manual. Cheers, Chantry
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,107 #2 Posted July 13, 2016 We do not have an operator manual but look through these http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?type=downloads_file&q="1-0280" First thought is the correct drive belt or perhaps the belt guides not adjusted correctly. The Peerless transmissions have their own manual but seldom get into the clutch problems. Garry

953 nut 55,909 #4 Posted July 13, 2016 Do you have a belt guard on the drive belt? The guard also stops the belt when clutch is pusher down.
Chantry 1 #5 Posted July 13, 2016 Hello Richard, Unfortunately, at the moment I am not at the same location as the Wheel horse, which I left behind in England when i returned to the Island so cannot check on whether there is a belt guard and or if, as you mention, it is actually stopping the drive belt. I have to confess, I am a bit of a "greenhorn" when it comes to belt drive machines and how they actually operate - the A800, which is very impressive in comparison to others despite its age, has replaced an old Gravely we had, which was PTO driven. I presumed the belt guide was literally to keep the belt in place when the idler pulley was not engaged/applying tension - is that not the case or does it have a dual purpose ? What actually adjusts the clutch ?- I have been searching for a workshop or owners manual but no luck so far. Any help or advice you could offer would be most welcome. Thanks, Chantry P.S. - Always send Best Wishes and Thanks to all veterans
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,107 #6 Posted July 13, 2016 This manual is for an earlier model that used a completely different transmission but the theory of the belt drive should be the same with the vertical engine crankshaft. You might get something from it. Garry

Chantry 1 #8 Posted July 14, 2016 Hi Garry, Many thanks again for your help and assistance - I'll let you know how i get on. I know the machine as I was at a tractor festival a couple of weeks ago in the North of England at a place called Newby Hall - as you can see from the few photos I have attached, amongst many other makes there were quite a few Wheel Horses on display, which made for a very intersting few days. Thanks again, Chantry
