T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,496 #3 Posted July 7, 2016 1968 Commando 8 comes to mind. 8 hp, 8 speed, and I believe it's a short frame, if I'm not mistaken. Under edit. After researching, the Commando 8 had a 4 speed. I did drive one years ago that had the 8 speed in it, but apparently the transmission was changed out at one point.

Racinbob 11,034 #6 Posted July 7, 2016 I've never thought about that Howard. 1967 was first year for the 8-speed with the 1067 and 1267 but those are long frames. I sure don't see a short frame 8-speed on the list. Looks like ya got another fun little project.
jimt1971 237 #7 Posted July 7, 2016 The 867 was the first Wheel Horse Tractor with a 6 speed as they called it then.
stevasaurus 22,698 #8 Posted July 7, 2016 Yep, and I think the 867 is considered a short frame with the #5060 transmission. 10 pinion, limited slip with hi/low.
Racinbob 11,034 #9 Posted July 7, 2016 I need to get a new list. Mine shows a 857 and an 877 but no 867. But sure enough, you guys nailed it. I found the OM for an 867 and it is a shorty with an 8-speed (6-speed) tranny.
MalMac 1,331 #10 Posted July 7, 2016 Racinbob, got one I am putting together here. That's the one that you, Steve and Mike were helping me on that 6 speed. Short frame with a 6 speed. Talk about a working tractor. There again I love the short frame square hoods. Sure put a lot of them together at are dealership when I was a small kid.
Racinbob 11,034 #11 Posted July 7, 2016 (edited) That's cool. I don't recall hearing about an 867 and since it wasn't on the list I figured the first time it was mentioned it may have been a typo. Then it was mentioned again. That's when I did a search here and found the manual. It's a never ending learning process for me but certainly a fun one. Hey Howard, did your question get answered? squonk 41,016 #12 Posted July 7, 2016 I'd like a short frame 8 spd with a Big-Block in it!
Bert 760 #13 Posted July 7, 2016 Just a heads up, finding the correct trans pulley for that swap is not easy. Some aftermarket pulleys can work, but the keyway is not standard on the 5/8 input shaft and the offset on universal type pulleys is usually to wide. I found this out the hard way
ACman 7,618 #14 Posted July 7, 2016 I'm thinking, that a 867 might be my next tractor . Sorry 857 , I'll try to stay on my side of the barbed wire . My 1075 made me fall in love with short frame square hoods . @stevasaurus , so does the 1067 have the #5060 transmission too ? That tractor got a lot of attention at the show, and I don't know why , so did the 1075 .
stevasaurus 22,698 #15 Posted July 7, 2016 Jeff...the 1067, 1267, and the 867 came with the #5060 10 pinion, limited slip with 1 1/8" axles and a hi/low (your basic 6 speed transmission). Of those 3 the 867 is a short frame square hood.
RedRanger 1,468 #16 Posted July 7, 2016 Did someone mention an 867? Technically a 6 speed though. At least that's what the hood decals say. The two in reverse didn't count I guess?????
ACman 7,618 #17 Posted July 7, 2016 Does this look like a long frame, there's no description in the ad . It's sure pretty .
Terry M-(Moderator) 2,175 #18 Posted July 7, 2016 That does appear to be a long hood on that one, ACman.

Compare the hood length to the 867 above and the extra space between the front tires and the deck. Didn't WH make a short frame square hood 10 or 12 horse in 1966 or 1967? I thought I've seen one? One year only deal? It was a three speed I know.
ACman 7,618 #20 Posted July 7, 2016 Yes , I see . But it does look to be a 67 model with the decales ?
