ohiofarmer 3,276 #1 Posted July 6, 2016 (edited) I am wondering what I might be in for when i take the thing apart this winter. With the low range lever engaged, all four gears can be shifted without using the clutch at all. There is a time lag when you shift into gear, and it can be maybe 2-3 seconds before any forward or reverse motion happens in the lowest gears. After pulling a heavy log the other day, there was a bit of grinding and then back to the way it was. High range is a normal operation and requires clutching to operate, When I top a hill, the force of gravity will cause the tractor to coast a couple of feet in both low and high range until the transmission slows it down. That is about it on the symptoms that make it appear to have a problem. I plan to change the axle keys when I pull it apart as they are just a bit loose. i changed the transmission fluid shortly after purchase about a month ago and the oil looked dark with just a bit of tan streaks from water i would judge it to be pretty dry in the trans case from my observations. I elevated the tractor two feet at the front and even sucked the last remnants of the trans oil out with a vacuum and small tube, The last bits [about four ounces] were tan colored, so it does pay to be as thorough.as possible. I plan to keep mowing with it in high range unless something else develops or unless you know of a compelling reason I should not use the machine. I have never had one apart before, but it looks like I need to think about the procedure and ordering whatever bearings and seals you guys recommend. If anyone has any ideas what the problem could be, please advise. Any rebuild links are also appreciated Edited July 6, 2016 by ohiofarmer
stevasaurus 22,884 #2 Posted July 6, 2016 What year or model # is your Raider? They used a few different transmissions through those years. The hi/low in each is similar. If I had to guess what is going on with yours, it sounds like a few teeth have broken off on the gear that engages the low. If you are going to use the horse, depending on the damage and why, you could cause more damage. Usually, the heavy stuff sinks to the bottom, so if whatever stays out of the way of turning gears, you could be OK. If you use the horse and you hear anything that sounds like a 22 rifle firing, shut her down...the gears are spitting out pieces. Here is a link to rebuilding a 6 speed transmission, which you may have depending on your year. The 8 speed transmission is pretty much the same, so these videos will help you in either situation. Rebuilding a transmission is really pretty basic and easy with just a couple of hand tools...like a 9/16" open end wrench. Getting a stuck hub off may be the hardest part...and we will be here to walk you through it.
ohiofarmer 3,276 #3 Posted July 6, 2016 (edited) It is a model # 10301 7 Serial # 877592. I watched the videos and it looks like it is something i will attempt. It looks like taking pictures during disassembly and arranging all the gears and thrust bearings in order is imperative. The videos are top notch and those little "mistakes" are probably the best part as they may prevent mistakes on the part of the viewer.. It looks like I will build a hub puller from a rear brake rotor from a 2002 Chevy Impala as I can get it to pull evenly on all 5 spokes that way. I made a template from a plastic ice cream bucket bottom and it fits the brake rotor Edited July 6, 2016 by ohiofarmer
stevasaurus 22,884 #4 Posted July 6, 2016 (edited) Those videos will be very helpful. You happen to have the same Raider 10 that I do. 1972 and you should have a #5086 transmission. You do not have the 10 pinion, limited slip differential...you have a regular 4 pinion differential with 1" axles. The 1" axles are something to note when you order axle seals. The other Raider 10s have 1 1/8" axles. This should be a piece of cake when you get into it. @racinfool40 (Mike) might have any parts you may need. I flagged him, so he may come in a take a look. Be very careful when taking those hubs off...they are a 5 bolt pattern with a 1" hole for the axle. Some guys on here lately have been looking for some and they seem to be a little hard to find. Use or make a puller...no hammers. The puller you may end up making will look something like this...top right. Edited July 6, 2016 by stevasaurus
