WH 417A Running And Then Stopped Dead

Feel free to point me to related threads - sorry if this is redundant.  

 

My 417A has been rock solid.  Recently it just stopped running and then would not turn over.  No noise at all when the key is turned.  

 

My first thought was a fuse and sure enough one of them fuses was blown.  Replaced the fuse and still no luck.  The fuse did not blow again so that rules out a short.  

 

Battery is fine.  measures ~12.5V.  I can touch a jumper cable to the starter terminal to spin the engine.  Engine won't start but turns fine - sounds fine.  

 

So... something electric is going on.  What would go wrong on the spur of the moment like that?  Ignition switch (I wasn't touching it)?  Why would the fuse blow once but not again (maybe unrelated)?  Any suggestions for a debug path?

There are some wiring diagrams in the "Manuals" section, if you don't have one.  I think I would start bypassing switches and checking continuity.  :think:

Is there an ammeter on this tractor? If there is everything has to go through that first. I have seen them burn up or at least the connections to them. If that has happened it will kill all of the electrics like ignition and would explain why the fuse won't blow now.

:WRS:          Seat switch or PTO switch could be the problem. If you need help after looking at the wiring diagram we can go through it step by step.

I have also had my Raider 12 stop dead a few times and like rexman said it was the spark plug wire. The wire was in the boot in the ignition coil but it must of stop making contact. That would be the first thing I would check.

I figured it was the wiring harness because I had gone through everything else and I wiggled the wire harness and turned the key and it started and then wiggled it again and then it shut off.replaced the wiring harness and I was good to go.

Just to close out this thread: After studying the wiring diagram and testing voltage and connectivity I tracked this to two problems.  1) One of the fuse holders was bent and the did not have good conectivity to the fuse "legs".  2) On of the wires connecting the fuse holder was frayed through.  Both of these where slightly intermittent (could be made to work when bent the right way) which made them hard to zero in on.  After replacing them both the tractor has been reliable.  

 

The tractor turns 30 this year.  It is now standing by watching football and wating for winter snow...
