erwine13b 27 #1 Posted July 2, 2016 I'm looking for a front mounted generator, or specs on how to build one of my own. i'm very interested in these, and would love to have one.
wallfish 16,981 #2 Posted July 2, 2016 (edited) If you can't find an original, Pulley mounted generator head at HF. General rule of thumb is 2 hp of engine per 1000 watts but you don't HAVE to use it at full capacity. http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=generator+head You just need to build a platform to hold it. erwine13b 27 #4 Posted July 2, 2016 ok so i got some dimensions, but what i need to find out next is how many rpms a 10 hp kohler puts out at full throttle..... the research continues
wallfish 16,981 #5 Posted July 2, 2016 Should be set at 3600 rpm. You can also find cheap tachometers at HF to measure that.
erwine13b 27 #6 Posted July 3, 2016 so how does a tach hook up exactly?
wallfish 16,981 #7 Posted July 3, 2016 (edited) Just a tool used to measure the RPM. http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-photo-sensor-tachometer-66632.html or search "tachometer hand held" on ebay for cheaper ones. Some contact, others don't. Edited July 3, 2016 by wallfish
erwine13b 27 #8 Posted July 3, 2016 ok so i guess its supposedly set from the factory at 3600rpm, my buddy hooked me up with that digital tach, and it varies by 5rpm every once in a while but is right as 3600 for the most part. correct me if im wrong but with a 10hp i should be able to crank out around 5k watts? 18 hours ago, wallfish said: Just a tool used to measure the RPM. http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-photo-sensor-tachometer-66632.html or search "tachometer hand held" on ebay for cheaper ones. wallfish 16,981 #11 Posted July 3, 2016 Sorry I missed the first question and just noticed it, Yes a 10 HP engine should be good for a consistent 5000 watts from the generator. Measure the PTO pulley and match that to a pulley for the generator so there will be a 1:1 ratio. Any difference in pulley sizes will change the RPM of the generator.
erwine13b 27 #12 Posted July 3, 2016 ok so im assuming im using the outer pulley on my belt drive, and thats just from seeing pictures. how to i know the size of my pto, like measure lol im a major noob. or does someone already know? what the size of the pto pulley is i guess i should have clarified . mmmmmdonuts 274 #13 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) Yes it is the pto pulley that you need to match for a 1:1 on the generator. I don't want to confuse you but here is a pulley calculator size website. http://www.blocklayer.com/pulley-belteng.aspx This would be used if the pulleys are not the same size. In theory you could run a smaller pulley on the generator if you wanted to run the engine at a lower rpm. The problem is then you would lose some HP (and some kW) of the by not running full throttle.
