How to check amp meter?

Any one know how I can check how many amps my engine is putting out?  I have a raider 10  with a kohler engine.  There is a amp gauge on it but it doesn't really show any signs charge  or discharge. All I have to check it with us a volt meter.  Can I use the volt meter in any way to check amps?.   Any help would be apreciated. Thanks jk

if you want to check the charging system, use your voltmeter to check the battery voltage when the engine is not running. A good battery should read around 12.6 volts. A discharged battery would measure 10 to 11 volts.

Now start the engine and at half to full throttle, the battery voltage should increase to 13.5 to 14.5 volts.
