grinchsr 642 #1 Posted June 2, 2016 Ok I determined that my 416 needs an electric low pressure fuel pump but which one. I am looking to find out which one the experts are using and where are they buying them and for how much. I see a lot of pumps on Amazon for good prices but the reviews are not so nice. midpack 970 #3 Posted June 2, 2016 I got one off eBay for around $12, it's been working fine for a couple years now on my C175
grinchsr 642 #4 Posted June 2, 2016 Thanks Midpack and Squonk for the replies. Hey Squonk it looks like you are the fuel pump wisperer. Nice job
Eric Friedrichsen 112 #5 Posted June 2, 2016 Last year when I rebuilt an abused 414/8 I removed the mechanical pump and installed an electric pump that I purchased from Brian Miller (A-1 Miller Performance catalogue) and installed the pump in the valley between the fuel tank under the seat. I purchased the round pump and found it to be absolutely reliable (so far). It uses little electricity as it is not a motor or a diaphragm pump. It is a solenoid pump with a piston operated by electromagnetic pulses. I wired it to the run position of the ignition switch which has worked out well. Brian charged $32.00 + shipping. The only problem I encountered was I found it very difficult to contact Brian. I highly recommend that you download Brian's catalogue; A-1 Miller's Performance Enterprises Online Catalog. I use it as a reference manual as he has a wealth of information on Kohler engines. Good luck, Eric
Kurt-NEPA 755 #6 Posted June 2, 2016 Both of my 520H's are running on Airtec low pressure pumps. I bought them from Amazon at a great price. So far I really like them. No more cranking the engine to fill the carb after the tractors have been sitting too long. We'll see how long the pumps last, but they are cheap enough not to be a real issue. elcamino/wheelhorse 9,360 #7 Posted June 2, 2016 Do you have a model number on the Airtec pumps? My 416-8 seems to have problems. Did you leave your mechanical pumps in place?
Kurt-NEPA 755 #8 Posted June 2, 2016 I use Airtex model E8016S. That is the low pressure pump. I mounted it below the tank and to the left. I did use a relay, fused at 10A on the power side and fired the relay from the R terminal on the ignition switch. If mounted in my position, you won't be able to use the rear lift, but that is not an issue for me. So far I have left the pulse pumps in place. I need to find some caps for the fuel line to keep the crap out.
elcamino/wheelhorse 9,360 #9 Posted June 2, 2016 Thanks for the info. Great help. Waiting for parts to show up so I can make repairs to fuel line from the shut off valve to engine. Always something with this unit. O well too stupid to walk and chew gum at the same time and a very tired retiree . Again thanks.
grinchsr 642 #10 Posted June 2, 2016 I just ordered that Airtex pump. Ebay $12.00 free ship. Good deal. Hey Eric good idea regarding the location of the pump. Has anyone not used a relay and direct wired it?
Eric Friedrichsen 112 #11 Posted June 2, 2016 I did not use a relay as it was not necessary as the piston pump Brian Miller sells pulls very little current. I too picked power off of the "R" terminal on the ignition switch. I really like the electric pump as you can fill the carb float chamber without grinding the starter which does pull a lot of current. Eric
Kurt-NEPA 755 #12 Posted June 2, 2016 13 minutes ago, grinchsr said: Has anyone not used a relay and direct wired it? I did use a relay. I had bought a pack of 5 off Amazon last year and had 3 on the shelf. Cheap enough. That said, I was nervous pulling amperage off the ignition circuit. It would probably not be a problem, but I decided not to try. I think the Airtex pump draws about 3 amps. Not a huge amount. I think your 416 uses is the same ignition switch as my 520H. If so, there is an unused terminal on the switch marked "R" It has power when the switch is in the Start and Run position. Perfect for a fuel pump. The problem is getting to it. Initially, I made some 3" jumpers with male and female 1/4" spade terminals on them to move the plug from the back of the switch. That left the "R" terminal open for use. My permanent solution was to get an Indak 5 prong plug from Wheel Horse Stables. I spliced that in place and used the wire from the "R" terminal to fire my relay. You could easily try it with out the relay and see what happens.
