Is this supposed to look like this?

Put on my 48" mower deck today, and the thing just wouldn't do its thing. I removed the PTO and this is what I found. Ain't there supposed to be grippy stuff on here?

Clutch pad material is supposed to be on the engine side of the PTO and it contacts the shiney section on that part.

Can you post a pic of the engine side?

I'm no expert, but I believe there should be a pad material of some sort in there.

Looks like you need a new clutch.

Not an expert but have changed a couple similar.

 

There should be friction material on the disc that's fastened to the crank. The part in pic should be metal only and flat. So worn but should be useable.

 

It's like car brakes. Once you wear off the material and start losing friction and have to add leverage to manual PTO, You're friction was the rivets that held the friction material. Once you see rivets it's time to replace.

 

Like automotive brakes, it's ideal when you replace the material, if it's flat to flat mating surface. but if you have to replace the friction disc, then it will wear to same profile eventually.

Ok, sounds good. Any idea where I can get friction? I iwll call the Toro dealer in the morning, but will consider price-friendly internet companies.

 

Also, lots of discussion I've seen on the internets machine about not using rivets, and instead using J-B Weld and other adhesives to fasten the friction pad to the crank-side. What are some inputs about that?

I will take a pad of friction material, but I don''t have a part number for it. And I can't find a link posted earlier... but Im old, its early, and I ain't had enough coffee yet.

Well, looks like it will be easier for me to just go get a pad from http://www.steinertractor.com/. Lucky for me, they around the corner. But, they don't carry Wheelhorse stuff, so I will be getting a JDS605, which according to the Google machine, is the same dimensions for my C145. 

 

Thanks for your help all, and I will be using J-B weld. :-)

Might also want to check your engaged tension after you replace it. As it wore down, the tension relaxed allowing it to slip more and wear out faster and faster.

How much tension is needed? I thought I jhad enough by moving the trunion, but I have realized I can have it so tight that the engine shifts slightly to the rear. In addition, adjusting things to what I thought was good tension turns out to not move those blades very much. I am figuring on needing to address belt tension via the mule, and PTO tension via the trunion.

 

(Liver and trunions anyone?)

      Looking to find a new home for my 84 (I think) C-145. It has a dump trailer with the enclosure for leaves, the PTO impeller to get the leafs into the trailer, the hoses for deck-to-impeller, impeller-to-trailer.
       
      I haven’t run it in over a year.
      The battery and the cable to the battery probably need to be replaced.
      Comes with a new head gasket still in the bag.
      Seat is cracked but still comfortable.

      Hello all. I am looking for suggestions on adapting the pto from my C series tractor to a harbor freight predator 420 13hp engine. I know the predator motors are a controversial topic however it is the route I have chosen for this particular machine. The intent was to mostly use it for plowing so no PTO required but it would be handy to have. Looking to hear from someone that has successfully done the swap that may offer any advice before I attempt to transfer it over. Just looking for any general pointers that will help me along the way to make it go as smoothly as possible.

      1979 c-101 nice project tractor just needs a few odds and ends, steering wheel, coil, carburetor bowl, the wiring was redone by previous owner....all 4 tires are good and hold air it goes into all gears no problem, transmission fluid has been changed, 10hp Kohler, message me or call or txt with any questions, it does run and runs well,  it’s been kept inside since I’ve had it, I would also trade for a mid mount grader blade thanks
