Hi basically the question i have is just as the title says, if my serial number starts with 62, then would my tractor be a 1962    (702). I am looking for a few parts and just want to make sure i dont make a mess of things.  THANKS!!

No. You should have a model number on it. If you would post pictures you'll get lots of help identifying it. :)

A 62-xxxx serial Number does indicate a 1962 model year tractor, But does not indicate actual model.

They had a few 62-xxxx serial numbers left over at the end of 1962 production so they got used up on the early 1963 models.

What is the rest of the number?

Like Gerry said...I used to think that a 62-xxxxx shouted 1962...but I knew about the early 1963 having that model number also.  The trick is in the serial number that is pretty much gone.  Do you have the belt guard?  That little square had both of that years stickers...1962 (702)...1963 (753).  If the sticker has been painted over and is still there...a little Acetone, rubbed gently will loosen the paint and maybe solve the mystery.  I'm going to say it is a 702...cause I get goose bumps when I see one...that does not happen with a 1963.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

Hi, No belt guard, but need one and need a pinion for steering.......found some stuff but just wanted to confirm year for proper fit, Although I doubt the pinion gears changed year to year......but the belt guard could have. Also need a dashboard, and if I have to buy one.....may as well be the correct one!! Thanks

Looking carefully at the painted decal, Looks like very possibly a 62-22xxx.    And with looking at Garry's recorded serial #s, looks like it could fall into the 1963 range of tractors.

Could very well be a 753.

Take a look at the list and manuals.

Don't think it is a 702 as it looks to have a later adjustable lift stop with the crank knob.  702's where no adjustable and bolted on differently.

Also-the tie rods look round?  702 had flat stock tie rods.

I'm thinking a 63 or 64.

I think what you have there is combination of parts that is so common to these old machines and makes positive identification very difficult if not impossible. The dash screams 701 but that's the only thing that does. The front axle says 1963 or newer. The steering wheel no later than 1963. The steering tower has provisions to bolt a left side cover on. The list goes on. But all these parts were often swapped out decades ago. Most of the evidence does say 1963. Personally I would get a dash plate from Glen, fix the controls, get the covers and have fun with it. :)

I just looked at the engine shroud....although faint it says  K161s.........and 28626E..........I am thinking 753 now....does that clinche it and if it does can I assume the steering pinion gear is the same as a 1962? and maybe the dash the same?? the starter shrouds?? Thanks for all the help!!!!!!!!!!

Unless I'm missing something (which is often) you'll need a dash for a 701. Check out Glen Pettit, a vendor here. Don't fret over the mix of years. That wasn't uncommon even out of the factory. You have a cool tractor there. :)

I saw something strange about serial numbers this weekend.  Oldredrider just bought an 854 that is mostly original.  It has the original correct tank stand but has a 62-xxxxx serial number, which the sticker looks original.  I've never seen anything like that before.  I've seen some early '63's with a 62-xxxxx serial number, but never an 854.  How could this be possible?

Cecil Pond left us with a lot to ponder, bet he is chuckling about it in Heaven right now!

Thanks guys, I ordered my steering pinion gear......its from a 702 so that would seamingly fit without issue. I am gonna resolve myself to say its a early 753, as that seems the most likely. As for the other items (dash and starter tins) i know are around and easily picked up as the season goes by.This will be something to drive around at shows while I am finishing up the restore on my 1960 400.  Maybe at a later dateI can   make everything correct and repaint. Thanks again for all the help/input!!
