Filters for Engine and Transmission / Hydraulic Oils

Recommended Posts

Looking for the most cost - effective filters and sources for my 1990 Model 520H.   It has Onan P220G engine.

Ebay and Amazon list lots of different filters but my positive experience on Red Square tells me this is the best place to ask.

I have noticed there are Stens filters and also some Chinese made Oregon filters.  (Not a fan of Chinese stuff)

Advice and shared experience from other members here would be sincerely appreciated.

BTW, Thanx BuKu to this website for the info I got by reading your contributions about stopping a surging engine last week.  After replacing the fuel line from tank to carburetor (it had a small break in front of the fuel pump - sucking air?) + replacing the fuel filter + new air filter and pre-filter + mixing in a gallon of NON-ethanol fuel to the tank + some careful carburetor cleaning on tractor, I took time for idle jet adjustment and idle speed adjustment.  Runs fine now and idles at about 1500 RPM with choke wide open.  Y'all were great help.

My apologies if this info is already somewhere on the website and I just don't know where to find it.

Thanx Again,

Vixmith

I've always liked the Napa Gold/Wix filters and I think they're well-regarded here too.

Wix at NAPA.  NAPA has their own name and part numbers for the Wix manufactured filters.

Be sure one is hydraulic filter, the other, engine oil. My '90 520 in gear, not hydro. I often think, "Geeze, wouldn't a hydro be nice?"

On occasion I use 100LL non-ethanol from a local small craft airport. :handgestures-thumbupright:

  • Appreciate the snappy replies.  And since all are saying NAPA, I guess I will avoid the Stens filters found online in the Stens replacement parts sources.
  • I have been rolling through the NAPA website looking for something that would say it is an oil Filter that is for an ONAN P220 engine...10 pages + of a dozen filters per page and no luck.  They list a lot of Altrom brand filters but don't say where they are from.  some pix showed an oriental script so I can figger that one out.  No mention of what any of them fit....
  • without whining too much, could I ask if any of you know the NAPA / WIX filter number you use for engine and for Hydraulic / Transmission ??
  • When I find out, it will have a well-used place in my service manual.

Otherwise I will call my local NAPA and hopefully get a clerk who knows or has a cross-ref.  sheet.

In related info:  here are some pix of my tractor when I was using it (last fall, pre-carb-cleaning) to pull a row of 35-year old hedges, along with the associated chain saw, ax shovel, and tow straps.  Removed only the bagger for this work.  Left the mower on for added weight while pulling.

Thanx, Phatboy

Reserved both filters and picking them up at my NAPA this afternoon.  Will get oils as well.

SAE 30 SF for engine - 2 Qt

SAE 10W-30 for transmission 5 Qt

Is that correct ??

From an earlier time having trouble getting oil to flow into the transmission, I devised a funnel with a vent tube, using a 3/16 or 1/4 tygon tube down the inside of the funnel and hanging below the bottom of the fill tube into the transmission case.  Worked great,  allowed the oil to rapidly flow down the fill tube.  I used the dipstick to figger where to hang the tube.  (Transmission was very low when I bought it.  I think somebody had trouble getting oil to flow in so they just quit, then figgered the transmission was crap.  You can see from pix above that it will PULL.)

Thanx again...

VGS
