Belt

on the 42" sd mower in manual it says to align the outside edge of slide bushing to edge of slot. my question is this if you do what they say the belt is a little loose. Wouldn't it be better to align the outside edge of slide bushing to inside edge of slot, that way belt would have firm tension on it. THANKS for answer in advance

I don't know why that is stated in the parts list and it is on many of them if not all.

That flat bar must be free to slide under spring tension. The belt length and pulley condition is what will determine where the bushing is on the bar unless I'm missing something.

Hope someone can explain.

I just flipped thru my 42 inch SD manual and I find no reference to what is mentioned by Redhead.  I have pulled many a deck apart to repair and paint etc and the installation of those plastic bushings which go under the belt tensioner bar on the deck is pretty straight forward.  It can only go on one way, bushing under the bar, small end of bushing goes in the slot in the bar, washer on top.  Once you install the giant spring, the tension is applied and the belt is taught.

It is a note on the illustrated parts page for the tension assembly and pulleys.

maybe it's the ideal "sweet spot" when the belt is in good working order... some tensioners in automotive will have an indicator for when the belt is in need of replacement.  just a shot in the dark....?
