scotty 252 #1 Posted March 31, 2016 I have a 416-8 and the clutch is really touchy on it i only have a little bit of clutch before it enagages the belt and i almost always do a wheelie by accident. daveoman1966 3,762 #2 Posted March 31, 2016 There isn't a 'clutch' per se, but a belt release mechanism that is adjusted by the LEFT side foot pedal. There is a rod and trunion (#22) attached to that pedal and you adjust it by turning the trunion in or out on the threads of the rod. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

daveoman1966 3,762 #6 Posted March 31, 2016 Replace the belt.... I only use OEM... They are a few bux more, but will last for years and years. Besides, many of the after-market belts are not geometrically compatible with Toro / Wheelhorse pulleys.. 7473 or 108501 per the schematics. How about the idler pulley and spring tension setup on the right side...under the belt cover. Maybe the spring is shot, or the linkage gets stuck somewho. slammer302 2,155 #7 Posted March 31, 2016 you might make sure the brake is adjusted properly. If the brake is dragging it will cause the mower to really jump when taking off. Because the mower can't take off slowly if the brake is dragging you will get all the power at once instead of gradually rolling to a start. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
paul@sses 0 #8 Posted June 26, 2019 I have the same question as the original poster. 1990 416-8, new toro belt, 107939, have adjusted the clutch pedal trunnion as far as possible. the pedal travel is greater, but the belt is so darned tight...and there is no adjustment on the return spring for the tensioner pulley.. any help would be sweet. thank you. wallfish 17,080 #9 Posted June 27, 2019 The belt must slip on the engine pulley as it's being engaged which is how it should ease into the tractor movement. If your tractor is instantly taking off then the belt is not slipping on the engine drive pulley as you release the the pedal. Must be a cloth covered belt and the pulley's V surface where the belt rides must be clean and smooth bare metal, no paint or melted rubber from previous belts. Pull the belt off and inspect that V groove on the engine drive pulley. I clean them with a wire brush and the engine running but just be careful doing that for obvious reasons Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
