russellmc301 600 #2 Posted March 28, 2016 (edited) i think the transmission is belt driven and therefore the belt will slip before anything breaks. i may be off the wall wroung thought Edited March 28, 2016 by russellmc301

slammer302 2,155 #4 Posted March 28, 2016 If all the bearings and gears are in good condition and hubs. You shouldn't have any problems. Especially if you have the 8 pinion trans with the 1" 1/8 axles. The 857 is a great horse for pushing snow. Is there a reason you are changing out the 8hp kohler and original 3 speed trans both should work well for what you are planning on using it for.
sorekiwi 761 #5 Posted March 28, 2016 You can blow up anything if you try hard enough. Treat it like it was designed to be used and you will be just fine.
marky 1 #6 Posted March 28, 2016 i broke a 3 speed differential before plus it has 5 more gears for mudding and i am putting a 20hp diesel engine for more power and the 8 horse kohler is worn out.

I have a C160 with a loader and 340# of ballast. The wheels will start to dig but you can`t make the belt slip.. And marky.. can whlvr 993 #9 Posted April 1, 2016 first thing I can tell you is the belt will not slip allways before something breaks,i thought this years ago when I left my 308 outside in the winter for a few days,it got warm then cold and the rear chains froze into the ground,i thought the belt will slip before anything else,NOT WHAT HAPPENED,i let the clutch out and she tore out 4 pinions and one axle gear, this was before the internet so the dealer was the only source for parts,it cost me over 600 dollars to get the parts, the only good thing was that I learned how to open up an 8 speed and repair her,and I had no book to tell me how,so I wrote down how and what I did,its haard to say what will break when used hard,it can be anything inside, bearings, pinions, bull gear(not too common)but one of the weakest parts are the shift forks
