Rear tire sizing

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So a basic question that I just want to confirm before I spend $200.

I have a 1977 B-100 with 22x7.50-12 turf tires on the back currently. As far as I know they are on the original rims. I'm looking for something more aggressive and the closest thing I can find is the 23x8.50-12 carlisle tru power lug tires. Will these fit on the same rims? Also, if I can use them, should I run them tubeless or with tubes?

Thanks for your help in advance!

My Tru Powers mounted on stock/7" wide (IIRC) wheels. Exact size you're thinking of running and they work and fit perfect. Good flat tread profile. Replaced 23x9.50 turfs, however I'm thinking of picking up a second set of wheels to keep the turfs mounted as well.

I mounted mine with tubes as the fronts needed tubes and it was some cheap insurance against leaks for the rears.

What are the size of your tru- powers 23x8.50-12 or are they 23x9.50-12 ?

They're 23x8.50. I could have gone with 10.50s but didn't for a few reasons. My wheels weren't wide enough to meet Carlisle's recommendedations, and losing an inch or so of wheel would have made the tread profile go from relatively flat as intended to somewhat rounded. In addition, it's my opinion that ag/bar/lug tires work as intended when they don't provide as much floatation. Seems like most farm tractors are sporting taller, narrow tires for ground engaging work to cut through the loose soil and bite into some harder ground to get traction (similar to snow tires on rally cars). So going with 8.50s seemed like a good idea. If I want floatation to minimize turf impact I'll switch back to my 9.50 Turf Savers and probably lose the wheel weights, as this yard is very flat compared to where I have been mowing. I'll keep the ags for dozing, tilling, plowing, etc. Now I just need to get a tiller setup and I'll be golden. And maybe a few more WHs.

Only downside so far has been using them in winter with 14" of snow, but 2-link chains got me through. I do think the Turfs would have performed just as well, maybe a little better as they would have pushed more chain into the ground.

Here is what I recently purchased. I have both ags and turfs on my tractors and found these to be a good compromise.

The 23X8.50s will fit very nice on your stock wheels.  Here is a pic of Carlisle AGs on my 1977 B-80.
