If you look at the manual they call the lever a parking brake, it loosens the drive belt and engages the parking pawl. In all likelihood most pawls have been chewed up to the point that they don't work, but there is was one there.

Well i got it home and really glad i did! It loaded well but i think I'm going to replace a few bad wires and clean out gas take and a carb rebuild. Go through it carefully and then she'll be happy,happy,happy. Thanks for all your comments.

Please correct me if I am wrong Dick, but  believe that lever you circled just engages the belt idler pulley and does not lock the transaxle like the later Sundstrands.

AND IT ALSO KEEPS THE TRACTOR FROM MOVING....HENCE A "PARKING BRAKE"!

I have a 875 and use it weekly to mow my lawn.
