Snowthrower improvements

Recommended Posts

slufoot733

Just wondering if anyone out there has made modifications to their D-series snow throwers to improve their efficiency? Mine works but the snow only flies about 10 feet. I would think it should go further. Of course it boggs down quite easily in wet, heavy snow but the light fluffy stuff doesn't go go much further. Or is this the norm for a single stage unit? Thanks for any suggestions.

Any single stage I have ever owned has done exactly that.

If you want to really throw it, get a 2 stage. :twocents-02cents:

Super smooth and slippery internals should help.

I am going to refinishing the inside of the shoot on one of my single stage snow blowers to make the snow slide out better.

I will be sanding and repainting the inside.  The blower is not for a D however.

I also picked up some 4" wide stick on Teflon that I plan to try at some point.

I found it on eBay and it was used by the Russian Army.

You may be able to change the pulley diameters to get it to spin faster.

Depends on the snow. Powder my single stage tall shoot will throw it 30-40 feet easily.

I am with squonk on this one. In the light powdery stuff my single will go between 25' and 35' with no wind assist. In wet heavy snow non of them are worth a darn in my opinion. I have a single short chute, then got a 2 stage. I also bought a single tall chute. It did almost as good as the 2 stage. So I got rid of that monster 2 stage. To me not enough difference between the single tall chute and the 2 to warrant having that heavy cumbersome thing in the way. I suppose the 2 stage has its place if you get 4 feet at a time with 6 ft drifts. If it's that bad I have a FEL. More than likely  you will find me staying in side drinking some turbo charged hot chocolate watching all the young pups removing snow.

Are you sure your belt is tight enough? Are you sure your clutch isn't slipping? I just moved 10" of wet snow with my D180. I'd say I got 20-25 feet away from the tractor. No issues at all. Here's a link to a blowing session from last year with about 5" of wet snow. I really think the 10" I moved a couple weeks ago blew even further.

Make sure your PTO clutch is adjusted such that there is no slip.  I used mine this week on the wet heavy snow and i quickly noticed the extra weight of the snow was causing the PTO to slip and make the chute clog up.  Unless its coming to a stop it may not be obvious the PTO is slipping.   A quick adjustment and my tractor was launching that wet heavy crap no problem.  I also spray the cute and auger down with pam / cooking spray before i run it.

I have 3 single throwers, the one in the pictures is the best of mine,i have another 42 single that will only throw the snow 10-15 feet, the auger is worn and it just doesn't work as well as the newer one, using a lubricant such as pam,or I use silicone spray really helps, even on rusty chutes

I've had a single stage blower for 30 yrs. on my 310 .:handgestures-thumbupright:     Don't know about other parts of the country, but we get our share of snow in the winter.

As long as the drive way is clear, I don't care how far it goes.   :twocents-02cents:

Thanks everyone for your advice. I guess I should take another look at the belt and clutch. They seemed OK earlier but a second look can't hurt. I recall the snow flying further in past years so I should double check.

Tommy, great video. I noticed your snowthrower, when lowered, touched on the left side first, then the right side. Mine does the same thing. I thought maybe mine was either bent or out of adjustment.....maybe they're just a little heavier on the left due to the drive mechanism.

Thanks again everyone. Have a fun winter!

      Hello!

I am looking for any and all snowthrowers that will work on my GT2500. I am trying to find one off FB marketplace but no one ever really posts the model number. Usually just the length. So I look for 42'' throwers but I don't know what will fit. A local seller has this for sale:

He says its 42 but unaware the model, the Wheelhorse logo looks to be from the late 60's/early 70's? It looks like the below thrower:

My question is if that thrower year/model will fit the GT2500. It looks pretty dang simple but I'm not sure. Someone mentioned something about the right size "Quick-hitch" in another post.

So long story short I scored a two stage snowthrower for my 520xi in the off season and hooked it up to my tractor and finally got a chance to use it this past weekend after we got a storm that dumped about a foot of fresh now.  First time out everything was going good and the snowthrower was moving snow like a beast, I did notice though when I got to the berm at the end of the road the blower would shake and vibrate pretty good when going through it.  I thought it was just normal operation since the snow tends to be more compacted from the plow, I just made sure to go nice and slow when I got to the end of the driveway and was able to clear my driveway and the neighbors without any issues.  Fast forward to the next day and I fired up the tractor to clean up the driveways as we got another couple inches over night.  Was able to finish my driveway but halfway through the neighbors when clearing the end of the driveway the blower shook and the suddenly stopped.  I shut it down and looked around and noticed the belt was broken, I didn't think too much of it as when I put the blower on the tractor the belt was showing some wear but when I saw how expensive the toro belts are I decided to run it as it looked like it would make it through another season no problem.  Once I got it back in the garage I removed the belt and that's when I noticed that something didn't seem right, the spring loaded pulleys on the right side of the pulley box were hanging below the blower frame, I took the chain and belt cover off the blower and noticed there's damage to the main belt pulley on the blower as well.  I pulled the pulley box off and noticed that there's groves worn into the metal from the pulley and what looks like some belt rub.  Anybody have any clues on what caused the belt to fail?  I'm including pictures to hopefully give some clues to those who have used these blowers extensively.  I followed the manual while installing the blower but I'm wondering if maybe I don't have something assembled correctly or am missing some crucial part.  I'd really hate to spend the money on a new belt only to have it blow because I didn't correct the actual issue.  I will say all the bearings seem tight on the blower and there doesn't appear to be any play in the shafts.  I look forward to any insight you guys can offer, thanks.

The tall chute snowthrower on my 520H  will twist the kotter pin and disconnect from the lift rod.  I've  also used  kotter keys with worse results. Has this happened to anyone else? I do have 2 washers on the end of the lift rod. Adding maybe 1/8 of a inch to the total length  of the lift rod.  I've  never had a problem  with the short chute snowthrower  that I have hooked up to my B100.

I picked up a used single stage that has been sitting.  The auger spins, bit things need a little TLC.
What chain lube have you found to work best, and last longest?
Any lube needed on the bearings? Or just replace if stiff?
      Thanks!
