callum12 256 #1 Posted February 21, 2016 Hi all, My 5053 3 speed transmission develops quite a leak from where the axle shafts leave the casting when in operation, could someone please enlighten me as to what sort of a job it is to change the seals and if the seals are easily obtained? thank you very much Callum
Racinbob 11,260 #2 Posted February 21, 2016 It's quite simple and can be done without opening it up. The hardest part may be getting the hubs off. Once that is done just pick out the old seal with an awl or small screwdriver. It's important to make sure the burrs (there will be some) on the axle are removed. Once that is done lightly oil the new seal and slide in on. Tap it flush and you're done. I use a short piece of PVC and a washer to keep it straight and get it perfectly flush. Also make sure there's no up/down side to side play indicating a bad bearing. If there is then they have to be replaced first. That's opening it up time.
can whlvr 993 #3 Posted February 21, 2016 im not an expert to what tranny that is but if its a tranny from the garden tractors, then you have to pull the hub off, which can be very hard, then remove the seal with a pick, small screw driver or some guys screw a small screw into the seal and pull out,be wary of bad bearings, try to move the axle up and down,or front and back, should be no movement,in and out there wil be some,1/8 to 1/4 inch,if no movement up and down then deburr the axle so it doesn't wreck the new seal, oil the axle shaft, slide the new seal on then set in with a seal set tool,or a piece of pipe the proper size,if you search you will find the part number for the seals
callum12 256 #4 Posted February 21, 2016 thank you both, getting the hubs off is easy, i only put them on a few moths ago! are the seals a wheel horse part or generic 'off the shelf' seals? thanks again, callum
Racinbob 11,260 #5 Posted February 21, 2016 (edited) They are easy to find. Try NAPA for a SKF 9815. I found a package of 6 pretty cheap on EBay. Edited February 21, 2016 by Racinbob
