Identifying an older hydrostatic drive unit

Recommended Posts

someguynamedFOX

I've been up and down the web looking for info on a hydrostatic pump and drive unit. It looks like a 90-2046 Sundstrand power unit. But this has an integrated reservoir cooler and slightly different. Its no longer in whatever it came out of. and I have looked for marking, but either someone took them off, or they were never attached. All the images seem to lead back to this forum. Maybe someone here has stumbled across one of these units and can point me in the right direction. Cheers

What is that number behind the dipstick? Have you googled it?

The pump and drive unit are currently sitting in a homemade parade float that our group had donated to us. Its been handed down a few times and no one knows what it came out of originally. Its driven by a 8HP Tecumseh. It looks like drives from early  charger 12 or 16 auto. But has the reservoir mounted to it. Just weird, I expected it to be from an older tractor. But most of those units mount directly to the transaxle. This seems to have been as well, but in a different orientation. First thought was the reservoir was an add on, but they both have the same patina. And the mount on the reservoir is quite strong, so it was made for it.

Don't think it's off a horse but not 100%....the red parts on it might be a clue. Might be off another brand red machinery.  Try Brian's advice and Google any numbers

found on it. Are you having problems with it? We don't want to see any parades held up if you are!

:WRS:             The numbers are correct for a Charger or Electro, but Sundstrand sold drives for industrial and agricultural applications too. The chances are it was on some sort of stationary equipment that needed to be variable speed and be reversible, no telling what it was.

Thanks guys, the number is 7090074. I had thought the 9 was an 8. But I have been striking out with google searches on both. The red parts made me think wheel horse. Almost every image I found on the web were part of this forum :) Starting to think industrial now as well. Just wish it had a label. 3 hours of google image search have given me some hints, but nothing definite.

Looks a little orangey for Wheel Horse, maybe Gravely, Jacobson, or Ariens?

Just found something real similar. Starting to narrow down on it. Yep, looks like a Massey 12, or at least real close. Thanks everyone who chimed in. The orange-red and blue-grey should have tipped me off.
