Sunstrand for sunstrand i hate both but...

Recommended Posts

psalms83:18

I got a guy off craigslist who will trade me his supposed no good sunstrand for finding one for him.

So i get a sunstrand that might be decent or just a stuck accelerater pin, but i get a fun project and i get to practice on a free one before i take apart one of mine!!!

So first yes i need a sunstrand from someone here on wheel horse forum, but i also want to add to the multiple threads of rebuilds on sunstrands step by step as i tear through it. And now that i have supporter status i can upload tons of pics.!!

what should i start with to crack it open soak it in a bucket of diesel??

I like your project.  I always start with lots of pictures.  The pumps and transmissions usually come apart pretty easily.  It is the hubs, hitches and pulleys that can make life difficult.  Download the manual, follow it as a guide and document the process.  Good lighting is important for good, close up pictures...you can get glare using a flash.  You can get an account free on U-Tube...this is great for uploading any videos.  Upload a video to your account, and copy the URL into your thread.  Videos are just too large to bring in from your computer onto this site.  Hope that helps.  :)

It is a good project.  You will want to get two 12pt sockets if you do not have them (3/8 and 5/16) 3/8" drive is good. About only special tool you need is a press.

Good luck

Are you doing a piston to piston or a hydrogear???

sort not familiar with those terms piston to piston...

just the sunstrand unit itself the hydro for the d200 is just the hydro without thatbox on the back of it. Which I'm having issues at my end with the manual downloads....

but are those little copper circle things and the face it meets the only serviceable parts?? And maybe the acceleration pin

correction thrust plate and piston assembly.....only serviceable parts?? Needing resurfacing??

If it is from a D200 it is a Separated Piston to Piston system.  The hydro motor is a piston operation similar tot eh hydro pump. (Older Horses had what is called hydro gear, the motor part was a gear pump) the pump part was essentially the same as the newer ones. Parts availability is limited.  The one place that had valve plates #4 the flat brass disc had only ones for the pump the motor one has to be machined and I got the impression 2 yeas ago they weren't doing them. They did have the motor shaft retaining clip #13. Most all the ones i tried to remove broke.:(

The parts most likely to be damaged are the valve plate and the  brass slippers (the 9 piston like things in the block #5) Several of us have had luck resurfacing them using very fine emery clothe/crocus cloth on a sheet of glass. The thrust plate may also be damaged...it is harder to resurface you may be luck and be able to just reverse it.  The seals and Orings are available from various sources.

Hodge and I did one a few years ago he documented it here there are others in that section Instructional thread/videos.

Aldon

I have a Sundstrand spare I would give you if you wish to drive over and pick it up. I recieved it with my C-161 as a spare when I bought it a couple years ago. I was told it was operational but have never tested it. The reason it was available and thrown in the deal was that while trying to disassemble the C-161 to paint it, the PO broke the fill tube. I live north of Albany NY in Corinth. PM me if you wish to take me up on it.

I also have a spare whole unit I want to get rebuilt at some point. If your successful, maybe Ill hire you if your up to it. I just cant seem to clear enough time to get to it myself.

thank u but shuboxlover offered to ship his out ...he called me this mornin thanks guys, I will restart this post with pics shortly ...maybe 3 days?

aldon does your sunstrand have a large rectangle or gear box looking thing attaches to the back of the cylindrical (real technical terms!!) part?? I think ?? That version for the "C" models were different than just the cylindrical pump itself which was for the D models

The c series used a standard system...the pump and the hydro motor were directly connected (the hydro motor may be teh thing you are talking about "hanging" off the hydro pump.  The D series separated system the pump and motor are separate connect buy a long manifold (tubes).  The manual has good pictures of teh the differences

can whlvr

good luck on your adventure, heres another thing that goes wrong, the slipper retainer ring,i started this rebuild some years back, went to a reputable pump rebuild shop, they do large equipment and the only reason he helped me was my neighbor sends the guy many many machines a year to rebuild, some are 20,000 dollars a pump,so he helped me,it still cost me around 400 bucks, but they did every thing, resurfaced all parts, had something inside machined from scratch because that part isn't available, but ive read here many times that guys rebuild them with good sucess
