Painting a 8hp Kohler motor

Recommended Posts

RedHorse54

hi everyone I have a question. Can I sand blast And paint a motor without completely taking out the guts of it. Like with the plates and motor covers off it. Can I sand blast and paint it just like that? Or will it get in the insides of the motor and ruin it? Thanks

I wouldn't do it.

I suppose it is possible though.

As long as no sand gets in the intake or exhaust.  How do you plan to seal those areas?

I'd remove all the tins and blast those if needed.

The block I'd hit with a wire wheel on a drill, prime and paint.

If you do go the sand blast route...:teasing-poke:

don't let any of that sand inside your engine...

or else, you'll be tearing into it for sure.   :angry-nono:

It can be done but the best way to do it would be strip the entire motor down of everything. Even then you'd want to seal it up as that sand could be real bad for a decent cylinder wall. You can make plates of steel for covers. I have even used that metal sticky tape. Another option is to use soda instead if sand. Less abrasive but will wash away alot easier. Should any get inside it would be a lot safer. Any sand inside that engine could be the nail in the coffin. I did mine piece by piece during a rebuild.

I was also thinking of using paint stripper. Would that still make the paint job come out real nice? So basically what I'm asking is, what's the best way to get the motor down to metal other than sand blasting where the paint job with come out real nice?

The way AMC said will produce a nice paint job remember most of the block will be covered by the tins so make your time count on those blasting and preparing, i have blasted a block, having said that it was torn completely down before machining and a rebuild and washed very thoroughly several times before paint and assembly.
