lawn ranger

Hey, I'm new to this forum as well as to wheel horses. Picked this up for free and know nothing about it, from what I've seen, it looks to be a 68? Was just wondering what year it is. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, the engine model would be nice, although I can look that up if I know the year I suppose. Need to find out what rod I need to get as this ones rod broke. Also, while I've got the engine apart, is that anything else I should do to it? Let me know if I need more pictures to find what year it is.

:WRS:      You have a 1968 Lawn Ranger. You will want to check the engine over closely to see what may be needed in addition to a rod.

can these parts be found pretty easily on ebay, amazon or parts stores still, or is it easiest to just go through a vendor on this site?

Tecumseh H-60 rebuild kits are easily found on Ebay.

will any of the kits for h60's work? I've found some kits, but the part numbers don't match up with others that I've found.

First you need to check the condition of your crank shaft and cylinder, if they are both OK then you can buy standard parts, but if not then have your machine shop tell you what to order.

i'm surprised that the connecting rod did not crack the block when it broke......take a close look  at the block , especially the area right under the starter

the connecting rod is Tecumseh part # 31380C.  it is available from Primeline as part # 7-03867

a set of standard rings is Primeline 7-03726 , a gasket set is 7-02823

you can get Primeline parts right from Napa or O'reilly auto parts

it does have a crack near the starter :(. I found an H60 shortblock off an ariens snow blower, I don't know the model # as its not posted, but should it work as a replacement? Or would I be better off going a different direction? Also this happened

you should be able to make it work , transfer everything that is different from the old motor to the new motor

what size is the crankshaft PTO on the snowblower motor?  3/4" or 1"?   your old motor was 1"..... adapter sleeves are available  if needed

is the snowblower motor set up for electric start? is the block drilled and tapped to mount the starter?

i actually have a snowblower motor on mine

the listing for the short block has no specs so I'll have to ask the seller. What about just sticking a completely different engine on it? A diesel lawn ranger might be cool.

or do you think that an engine with more torque would hurt the transmission? I read the transmission is pretty tough, but have no experience.

You won't be able to hurt the transmission (unless you exceed 100 HP) :ROTF:   I think it is a cool idea to go with something a bit different, diesel would be a good choice! Keep us posted.

I just put an 8hp kohler electric start on mine, glad I made the switch. I had to use a smaller motorcycle battery and modify the gas tank support to fit. I don't think I have any pics and it is tucked away in the shed for a long winters nap.

I am in the process of putting a Harbor Freight Predator  engine on my '67 Lawn Ranger. Check the post in this section for pictures. It is going well, still waiting for some part to come back from the blaster. Hood needs to be modified, but a new engine for about $100 and they have a good reputation.

I came across those the other day while looking for a replacement. Definitely a good price as compared to the $300 and $400 Hondas and Kohler. I'll take a look at your thread.

Man I like that! Great photos too!  Super detailed and clear.

What a snug fit with the gas tank!  How do you check the oil?  Looks like it would be difficult to remove the oil stick?
