Eaton 1100 cooling fan direction

I have a problem.  tearing apart a 314H Eaton 1100 to clean up the trans fin.  looked at my 520 also been apart  see pictures for differences.  anyone know which way is right?

Silver attachment bolt is the 520, the red (factory bolt/washer) is the 314H

OK, cleaned, and made adjustments.  So the following two should be correct.

Just like Don said, the fan draws the air across the transmission. The hint is the leading edge on the fan in #2.

Think you need to turn the fans over. Either way they blow the same direction but you are pushing the blades the way they are now.

I believe that the fan turns clockwise as you look at it. The fan pulls the air across and exits against the tire.

When looking at the pto does it not turn counter-clockwise? The fan is going to turn the same way.

 

Another way of looking at it - the snowthrower auger turns in the opposite direction because to drive chain travels under the drive sprocket instead of around it.

 

How do I remember? Have a few with the wrap the rope around the starter cup on the flywheel. That is done clockwise and the pull turns the flywheel clockwise so the pto on the other side is turning counter-clockwise when facing it.

You guys may be correct but to me it is backwards.

Every manual I look at shows the fan mounted as the last photos show.

Anyone have experience in fan design?

I have not checked pump direction yet, but from a practical Push air/pull air view, I would expect the engineers to pull air across towards the tire as John M pointed out, otherwise wouldn't pushing air towards the cooling fins also push dirt an debris into the fins. :confusion-scratchheadblue:

The convex edge of the fin is the leading edge. Looking at parts manuals for the various tractors with an Eaton 1100, you can just make out the design of the fin.

 

Somebody has to start a tractor - and observe it. I could be totally wrong.

I was assuming clockwise. If it actually turns ccw, then I would agree the fan is backward. The trailing edge of the fan has that little elongated tip, probably to lower noise and prevent vortices

I think we are all saying the same thing. 

Parts manual shows the fan installed like mine and the last set of pics from the OP

If I'm looking at the right diagram-it seems that the fan fins would push air in towards the fins-not-out. Which it should do - IMO

Looks like it blows, not sucks! Ether way you are moving trash across the tyranny. My 1077 has a screen over the fan that would keep the large stuff out.

Looking for another photo, I found this one. It is the 417A right after I picked it up this past summer. The tractor had been stored for 13 years and that is the original fan.

are you sure about that? CCW turning would push air across the pump IMO.

I’ve never felt air coming out from under the fender pan/ tire area. I think air is pushed across the fins not pulled. Now I need to go look at a few of the examples I have.

Air is definitely pushed in towards the transmission.

You can feel it blow if you lift the seat and put your hand down by the motion control cam assembly.

 

Likely cools better that way.
