DougC 2,641 #1 Posted December 4, 2015 Like many of you guys I bought the Harbor Freight 12v heater/defroster with super coupon for $9.99 I plugged it in to my power outlet on my Solar Booster pac as I sat inside the house sipping an adult beverage and could not believe how much heat the darn thing produced. I expected warm air. What I got was hot. Hot enough that I could not comfortably keep my hand close to the outlet........ Now, I see why the directions say to not run it for more than 20 minutes at a time and that it WILL burn out a cig. lighter if not rated at at least 15 amps. The 12v power port on my Solar booster pac got warm, to WOW that got warm. My purpose of installing LED cab lights was to keep the amp draw from the charging system and battery to a minimum. I have added a 15 amp fused 12v aux power outlet to plug my amber roof mounted beacon and a duel lighted toggle switch for the LED roof lights. If I add a dedicated circuit to power the cheapo heater/fan fused from battery is that gonna kill my charging system or voltage regulator on my '95 520H?
953 nut 56,338 #2 Posted December 4, 2015 If you ran it continuously it would probably drain the battery a bit since it exceeds the charging ability, but as you said it shouldn't be run continuously and gets too hot after a few minutes. I have one that I use to help defrost the windshield of my pick up but it isn't needed more than five minutes or so. The charging system won't know it is there, all it knows is the battery needs charging and it will do what it can.
Fun Engineer 859 #3 Posted December 5, 2015 I only used mine when the windshield started to frost up. Never to heat the cab. Used it on a 314-H. Never had any battery problems.
