Pullstart 62,887 #1 Posted December 4, 2015 So since the first tractor show we went to as a family in the summer of 2014, my wife has shown interest in Allis Chalmers tractors more than anything else. She says she wants something big enough to pull me out when I get in trouble with my toys So since October I've been tip-toeing around a friend of a family lead on a narrow front WD45. The owner is 90 and our friends who are his kids say it's time to sell. It's been some time since it's run and they got a new coil, plugs and battery for it a month or two ago and she came right alive. It runs great and momma's birthday is in 14 days. Along with the tractor comes a 3 bottom plow, an 8' two rowed disc, a cultivator, a few spring harrow drags and who knows what else we'll be able to dig out of the weeds. I won't be able to pick it up until there is a good frost in the ground, but she says she wants to drive it home no matter how cold it gets. 11 miles from the house, we'll see if I get to take a spin on the way home too! 12 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Pullstart 62,887 #5 Posted December 4, 2015 I'm sure we'll have to start hauling the flat bed to the shows so we can bring the big one... but she's fine with the AC colors for now. They have all kinds of cool features for a 50's built tractor, but my favorites are pulling a rod to engage the starter and a hand clutch. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

ACman 7,618 #8 Posted December 4, 2015 (edited) Can't go wrong with a WD45 . It will run forever and parts are plentiful . You can go to nearest AGCO dealer or try Stiener Tractor Parts they're a MI based company and have aftermarket parts for most major brand AG tractor . Got to say your wife has good taste in tractors . Orange is sure prettier than those green ones IMO , and they kind of resemble a RJ . That's what drew me to . I'm sure if AC was going to use a manufacturer in the 50's to build a lawnmower it would of been the RJ. Any ?'s PM me as I grew up in a AC dealership . Now the ? Is what are going to get her for Christmas . Does anyone else see the resemblance or is it just me. Buy the way Mrs. Pullstart . For now, the push/pull ignition switch is frozen up, so you need to hold two wires together for it to run, but once we take delivery I'll start soaking it with some penetrating oil and see if I can't pull it apart and clean it all up. I love the rear wheels on those things! This one has the diamond shaped tread turf tires on the rear and any land we will be on with it is good and flat. Our house is only 1.5 acres but the property we'll be moving to in the next year or two is 10 acres of farmland. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

We used to have a 39 B It was a hand crank job that I converted to electric start. Had to split the tractor and replace the center section. Used a 6V starter with a 12v battery. VAROOM! 6wheeler 603 #14 Posted December 8, 2015 Awesome. I spent many hours on a WD raking hay, hauling manure and hauling hay racks. Great tractor. As a matter of fact? I am currentlylooking for one as well. Ours had a wide front and 3 point hitch. Also, the push pull switch was replaced with a separate pull to run. Pullstart 62,887 #15 Posted December 15, 2015 So I stopped by today and dug out some of the implements in the lean-to (literally dug them out, dang woodchucks!) and found out that there are two cultivators, one "mid mount" and one rear. Score! They are in very good shape and I pulled the top quick hitch attachments off so I can bring home and soak them in oil for a while as they are quite sticky. We'll probably be stopping by tomorrow to grab some pictures. The belt drive PTO bearings are quite rusty and seized up at the moment, I'm not sure if it's worth trying to clean them up and get them rolling or just find replacements if we ever need the belt drive useful. Before we move it, the radiator will need to be topped off and the tires aired up a bit. Pullstart 62,887 #19 Posted December 21, 2015 The property owner's son in law who I'm dealing with says there is a big clay spot between the barn and the road, so we need some good frost in the ground before we haul everything out. ACman 7,618 #21 Posted January 3, 2016 (edited) That looks to be a real nice straight original tractor . I've seen many WD's , WD45's and can't recall seeing one with diamond tread tires . I also see you have a distributor instead of the normal mag . If your going to do a tune up try to use delco spark plugs , cap and rotor . Make sure to check the length of metal tab of rotor to the old one. I've had one that was longer and fire two cylinders at a time and took a long time to figure that one out . They make a repop of the rear red fender light . If your rear rims are not rusted through that's a real bonus . Pullstart 62,887 #23 Posted January 5, 2016 All the sheet metal seems to be in very good shape and is all there, shy of the battery cover. It seems it was subject to corrosion, I might patch it up or just end up remaking one. The tires I might be concerned with if we hook up to that 3 bottom plow! I'll probably be on the lookout for some ags but I'm not sure if I'll get another set of wheels or just swap them out. ACman 7,618 #24 Posted January 5, 2016 (edited) Those rear rims were called (power shift) rear wheels . They were made so one person could adjust the rear track width by loosening the clamps on one wheel ,then hold the break on the opposite side ,let the clutch out slowly . When you done this the wheel would spin in or out depending if you chose forward or reverse . I think there some old promotional ads on YouTube . Keep an eye out on CL there's often some being parted out ( you probably already know this ). So if the tires aren't loaded your only dealing with tire and rim . Allis Chalmers had a lot of first , air tires , 68 mph speed record with a 32 model U in 1935 with Ab Jenkings at the wheel , turbocharged diesel D19 in 1961,to name a few .
