bbuell1056 1 #1 Posted December 1, 2015 Hi everyone new member currently restoring an old 1056 , I got this tractor in parts and pieces it's sat out back for about 6 years and so far i've rebuilt the tranny and got it running pretty good. I have a question about the belt guard on these tractors, it came with one but i do not have any bolts or any idea where it mounts. It currently grinds going into gear and i've heard the tabs coming off the guards let the belt slip on the pullys. If someone could plese post some pics of the bolts, where the guard goes, and how the tabs go on or how it works it would be great. Thanks
sorekiwi 761 #2 Posted December 1, 2015 I dont have pics of the 1056 I had a few years ago, but from memory the belt guard mounting was very similar to what is on my 500 special. Pics here: http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/7242-1968-500-special/?do=findComment&comment=66274 There is also a tab on the front of the guard that bolts to the motor. The guard is necessary to properly clutch the transmission. When the clutch pedal slackens the belt, the guard guides the belt forward to disengage it from the spinning engine pulley. Hope this helps, hopefully someone will post pics of a 1056

WHX?? 49,580 #4 Posted December 2, 2015 Those pics are real close but my 1067 has tabs in front at both the top and bottom. Check yours to see if there was one there once. They do need to be ther for the clutching as sorekiwi says. I fthey are worn down a little brazing on them to build them back up works.

bbuell1056 1 #8 Posted December 5, 2015 The only problem I really have is mounting the front, the rear is okay but the front pulley seems too big and if that guard has a mount in the front going to the motor or somewhere in that area it does not line up with that pulley being in the way. Thanks for the help it seems pretty simple to mount guess I am not seeing something obvious.
Martin 2,133 #9 Posted December 5, 2015 (edited) maybe that drive pulley on the engine has been replaced at some time. that would explain why the tabs on the guard look bent in the pic. i would be doubtful if that combination would work correctly like that when clutching. the small pulley was probably replaced to get some increased ground speed. my 1057 (below) is noticeably slower than some of my later gear drive tractors in top gear. the later ones have a noticeably bigger pulley. here is the standard guard/pulley....
