Front hitch build

Recommended Posts

This front hitch build was not at the top of my to do list, but I finished winterizing the boat so I decided to make a front hitch to make it easier to move the boat into it's tight winter storage spot..
I planned to build one like stevasaurus', but then I read  wh500specials  post on the Clark boat Works using a  WH front hitch that could lift the trailers.
There sat the Yammy with the blade off for a new scraper bar installation......the plow frame looked like a hitch mount.   Dug out a 2" ball and some scraps from an old roto tiller frame.

A few cuts and bends and drill some holes.

Pick up the boat

It worked ok on the Yammy using the front winch that is close to the load point to pick up the tongue.   I keep about 10% of the total trailer load on the hitch. For this boat, that's about 400lb. So with the location of the axle bracket  pivot point, the winch  lift point,  and the hitch load point, the winch is actually  lifting about 470lb.   I don't think this would work using a tractor where the lift point is back near the middle of the tractor.  The tractor lift  would see about 800lb at the lift point to lift the same 400lb at the hitch.   I would not recommend using the tractor to lift this kind of weight.

I HAVE USED MY GT-14 FOR YEARS TO MOVE MY BOATS. I REMOVE THE SNOW BLADE AND PUT A TRAILER BALL ON THE SNOW PLOW FRAME. IT WILL PICK UP ANY TRAILER I HAVE. MY BIG TRAILER HAS A 25 FOOT BOAT ON IT. I HAVE FRONT HITCHES ON ALL OF MY TRACTORS.       RUSS

That's good to know Russ.  I was just concerned about trying to lift 400lb on a system that was normally only used to lift a 40lb snow blade.   Maybe I'll put  the hitch on one of my hydros and see if it will lift the 400lb.   I am not familiar with the GTs lift system, does it have the same rock shaft lift system as the Cs 3,4,500 WHs ?

Outstanding Ed...I'll bet you are loving that front hitch already...and with the winch...priceless.  :)
