GlenPettit 1,717 #2 Posted October 22, 2015 Randy:Yes, that would be the correct pice for an excellent 1st Edition, 2000:,but a new 3rd Edition 2012, which is excellent and slightly larger & better is less than $50 and still available.
CasualObserver 3,409 #3 Posted October 22, 2015 (edited) well, I thought I posted the link to the online store but it appeared to be bad or broken so I deleted it....Did he finally sell out of those 3rd editions? Nevermind... my link was just bad. Here's the new onehttp://wheelhorsestory.com/ Edited October 22, 2015 by CasualObserver
rmaynard 15,727 #4 Posted October 22, 2015 Just to add a little insight, the original book shows up from time to time on eBay and other venues. There are several factors that drove the price up. The scarcity of the book, and the fact that the picture of the naked lady driving the Wheel Horse at a nudist colony was removed from the second edition. Also the quality of the second edition left a lot to be desired. It is truly a market driven price. The 3rd edition, which is far and away the best, has the naked lady picture back in, and in addition has many more pages with more information. It includes a DVD with actual footage of the Ponds at work.Hope this helps a little.

WheelHorse79 271 #7 Posted October 23, 2015 I really wish there would be a supplement to the Wheel Horse story that covered the history of WH from 1982 until the end in 2007. I realize that Toro has been very secretive of their Wheel Horse records, but I would love to see the history continue until the sad, bitter end. It would also be enlightening to understand the competition and market forces that pushed Wheel Horse from being the premiere LGT manufacturer down to extinction. In my mind, Wheel Horse was a great American success story that met with a sad end once it became a corporate football.

WheelHorse79 271 #12 Posted October 26, 2015 I wish I were an author and/or retired so I could look into this. There are also a few on this board who have some insider knowledge of some of the happenings, which would be great to capture before it's lost. Maybe if we started a sticky topic that everyone can contribute to, it would be the beginnings of this effort. What are you thoughts about this, Mr. Moderator? I think it would be a great discussion.

WHX?? 49,483 #15 Posted November 3, 2015 (edited) I really wish there would be a supplement to the Wheel Horse story that covered the history of WH from 1982 until the end in 2007. It's not rocket science '79, Toro said they wanted to concentrate more on the commercial market so supposedly they killed the brand to do that. Truth be told it's my gut reflex that they couldn't produce a tractor that (hopefully would be of WH quality) would be marketable in the big box age. Probably a smart business move at the time. Have to understand that in today's age and even in the 90's bean counters rule. In other words Toro decided to kill the brand than try to keep up with other brands that were going with cheaper easy to produce stamped frames and the like. Engines in this period went from rebuildable to throw away. That was huge. One could debate these things and others to no end but the end result is go with the old and save an old horse from glue factory.
