GT 14 Hydro Pump question

Recommended Posts

Aldon

Gents,

I have a Hydro pump which is supposedly pretty new that I would like to use on my GT14 I am putting together. It has a broken Cam Block Support, part number 5993. I would have called the part the controller but Cam Block is the actual part name, Line 51 on parts diagram. I also need to replace the plastic piece as well but if I can pull the Cam Block and install a different one, I have spare plastic piece as well.

I have not yet torn into a Hydro.

It looks like no big deal to replace and I have some spare Hydro's and just wanted to know if the process is as straight forward as it appears or if there is something I should be wary of.

One of the more important things to check out is the acceleration springs and valves. You will see them in the manual and it gives a very good blow by blow account of how to do it. If you need springs send a PM to "Refracman", he has a contact that has some. Good luck and keep us posted.

Looks like it is going to be harder to get off than I suspected. Once again wrestling with pulling something from shaft. Anyone have ideas or experience pulling the Cam Arm from the Pump Shaft. It looks like if I can get that free, its down hill from there,

I was able to get Cam Arm off. Does anyone know what socket will fit the screws that hold the Cam Block onto the pump are?

Drawing says Socket Head 1/4-20 but it l have yet to find a socket that will fit. I still have a few to try but if I need a 12 point socket or something I may have to hit store or order on line.

A socket head cap screw will require an allen wrench, don't remember what size.

Evidently this pump was replaced and socket heads were replaced. Pretty sure its a 12 point head. Local hardware store does not have them. I obviously dont have them hence the trip to hardware store. I'll try the Box stores tomorrow and if no luck, the trusty internet to rescue!

They may be the external Torx type, Some auto parts stores have tool sets you can rent or borrow, I think Advance Auto is one. Good luck.

You may be right. I am gonna buy a Cam Block and Cam from a fellow member as its easier than pulling the hydro out of storage. As such, I went ahead and ordered the single socket from A-prime so I will egt it before I get the parts anyway. If it does not fit, I will look into the torx idea. A friend down the road and fellow Red Horse enthusiast is a machinist mate in navy and may be able to point me in right direction. He also has been so busy I have talked to him only a few times this summer but a couple times in past week. So I have the phone a friend option.

External Torx drive will only have six lobes on it. Worked for the company that designed that Torx drive for over 45 years.

Do you have a source for the pump to motor gasket?

No sir. Have not yet had to separate them. The base project tractor I acquired to use for restoration was chosen due to fresh/new pump. It also had 16hp engine and new old stock rear tires. So I have not researched Hydro parts beyond the Cam and Cam Block. I did get lucky and find a new Old Stock Cam so hopefully will not be as brittle from being subjected to environmental conditions.

I recently used a 12 pt socket to remove these same bolts.

Thanks all.

I'm really liking that bright pump on the black frame (and the black frame in general) I can't wait to see how this one turns out!
