Solex 27 #1 Posted August 21, 2015 I have a 1986 308-8 that has been re powered by a Magnum 12. My experience has been that the tractor needs to come to a complete stop before a gear change or it will grind. Is this normal operation for these manual transmissions or can you step on the clutch and change gears on the fly?
JVDWheelHorse 170 #2 Posted August 21, 2015 With the manuals you need to come to a complete stop from my experience
tunahead72 2,443 #3 Posted August 21, 2015 Absolutely normal. From my 1986 300 & 400 series operator's manual:"Never attempt to shift gears with unit in motion. Severe internal transmission damage may result".

stevasaurus 22,893 #6 Posted August 21, 2015 Just like the Big Tractors...you start out in the gear you want to use.

wrightorchid 261 #8 Posted August 21, 2015 Please do stop. These are not synchro trannys. I hear you can damage the low/high selector also, when shifting while moving.
Solex 27 #9 Posted August 21, 2015 I suppose that I was being a bit lazy and should have simply downloaded the manual before going to the keyboard with this question. But it is always more fun to hear from the members and supporters.Thank You.

Coadster32 793 #11 Posted August 21, 2015 You can only grind third gear so many times....At least in the old trannys anyhow.
JVDWheelHorse 170 #12 Posted August 21, 2015 (edited) What will happen after? Edited August 21, 2015 by WheelHorseKid1843
boovuc 1,090 #13 Posted August 22, 2015 Bend the wishbone selector making the tranny want to pop out of gear or not engage at all, chew the edges off all the gears to a point where you can't get it to engage the speed you want, stress and destroy the bearings that everything rides on in the case, snap a tooth or two on a gear thus elimination that speed or all of them depending on the gear that is damaged. (And the list goes on). :< )Complete stop before changing speeds.
