I think Jerry (oldandred) started that rumor. Just look at his avatar.......

He once fell off his tractor during a pull and the sled ran into his head. :omg: That would explain a lot. He needs :D

On a further note, years ago on the original Yahoo Wheel Horse group, a guy named Charlie from NJ claimed that in the early 60s Wheel Horse made a bunch of tractors for Dole Pineapple in Hawaii with special modifications and painted them.......yellow :hide: . True or not, who knows :hide:

I don't know about the yellow ones....I'd guess that Dole co. more likely bought a bunch of Wheel Horses and painted them yellow to match their other equipment.

But I have noticed a lot of RJs and a few suburbans that were painted in military olive drab. Did Wheel Horse supply the military with mowing machines? :hide:

Jim,

If ya' saw the model 953 at the Wheel Horse Show this year you would have your answer. :hide: That 953 had more fire power then a aircraft carrier ..... A grenade for a hood ornament???? YIKES! He will be bringing the Military 953 back to the Wheel Horse Show next year! :D

Jim, you are right about the military part, at least at Little Rock Air Force Base, During the late 80's and 90's all the military had was wheel horses, Thats where i was first introduced to the wheel horse, it is so long ago i don't remember what model it was but i know it was powerful and the reason i started buying wheel horses now.

Even now the base has Toro mowers, big and multi mowers on each rig, some are about 10' decks,

Henry , where in Tn, just made a raid up there and got a 20hp onan, in chatanooga, beautiful mountains.

a guy named Charlie from NJ claimed...

Buzz,

I never heard the Dole story, but you know as well as I do that there aren't many things I'd bet AGAINST Charlie on! Great guy and real WH font of knowledge. Too bad he bit the Compact Utility Tractor bug and gave up on these little red ones...

Charley from NJ was in the hobby for a quick buck that's why he left; people caught on to his game.

Eric,

You know Charlie doesn't monitor this board, so you know he's not likely to respond to your criticisms directly, so I guess I will stick my neck out. I'm not going to fight his battles for him, but since you've publicly insulted a friend of mine I feel obligated -once - to present the other side in public. After this I'll stick to PM's...

There was no "game". And perhaps he did make some money on selling some of his stuff, but I think many of us sell things to feed our habits. At one point he had a WH fleet that rivaled anyone's and keeping it going was his principle mission.

Certainly wasn't a "quick" buck though. And he wasn't a predatory seller either.

I'm sure you remember years ago in the days of Yahoo and dialup the hundreds of manual scans and pictures he uploaded that were meant to help people figure out what fit their tractors and how it mounted? Or the various Yahoo groups he formed trying to categorically organize WH information for better reference and retrieveability? Or the transportation board he set up to bring distant sellers and buyers together on their stuff that was too big to ship? This was before there were any internet sites that made life easy with a format such as RS enjoys.

How about the dozen dealers' NOS stocks he bought out when they folded, inventoried, and offered for sale at the 1986 "book" price thus putting countless obsolete NOS parts on the market that were destined for the junkyard? He was even selling stuff at one point by the pound at the same rate scrapyards would give for junk. All in effort to keep this old stuff sputtering on.

When he sold bigger stuff - even prior to eBay - he typically let the buyer name a price. He might have shot down a few offers here and there, but I know he let a lot of rare stuff go pretty darn cheaply. He knew the values of this stuff as well as you or I, but he generally was below market value unless someone tried to knowingly screw him.

Not sure where the two of you decided to not like each other and it's not my business. He's a friend of mine and we don't even talk about WH stuff anymore. Far and away, he's the smartest guy I have ever met in any facet of the tractor hobby and I always thought he was a little out of place amoung people like you and me.

And, he didn't leave the hobby because people caught on to some "game". He dumped all his WH stuff since he now has a big Deere utility tractor and a couple Kubotas to use at his new place in VA. The WH's just don't suit his needs. Had a few folks not spread false rumors about him being a shyster he probably could have saved himself several trips to the recycling yard with tons - yes tons - of WH NOS stuff in his truck.

Sorry MOD's. Remove this if you need to...

Steve

I don't know whether he monitors the board or not. I stand by my statement. You are entitled to your opinion, no matter how inaccurate it may be.
