I have a gt14 that came with a haban 414 sickle bar mower, not sure if all parts are here, looking for pics of one installed or advice of how unit attaches.  Any info would be appreciated, don't think the unit has ever been installed and would love to give it a shot.

I got in but can't find the file now. Everything appears to be Bolens product but I don't know how to navigate the site. The Haban info started in this Yahoo Group and believe it was duplicated in the Big Tent as a backup.

All of us Haban nuts down here in the lower 48 are having a tough time locating pics of a mounting on a GT 14 and detailed instructions too.

If your Canadian buyer figured it out, we'd all love to see what he did to get it going.

As Garry mentioned above, I was able to pull the Haban 414 Manual from the site he indicated. Quality of the electroinic file is very good for the Wheel Horse Model.

 

The Haban 414 was meant for GT14, Electro 12, Charger 10 & 12, Raider 10 & 12.

 

I just closed a deal on one that is missing th epart # 7625, # 8 on the Parts diagram.

 

Unless this particular Sickle Bar has gone through multiple owners who have each posted on the web, it appears that this piece is commonly lost as I ran across a couple requests for it in my web searches.

 

It looks to be something that can be fabbed easy enough if someone can provide dimensions. See pic.

Boy, you are really "on the case" since last evening! Yikes!

Yeah, makes sense to moi. If you can discern the correct diameter size to tubing required, it shouldn't be a huge feat to figure something out. And the length required.

Or if another Haban 414 owner or someone who least has some familiarity with them as far as mounting goes can hop in here with some input, that would work or help too.

A little extra fabricating of some small hardware might be required to bolt everything up and secure it, but that's probably not a huge biggie.

It would seem to me, the basics to mounting a sickle bar mower would would be very similar on any lawn or garden tractor, with slight variations dictated by the physical layout of the tractor in question.

Aldon, this might be an excellent question to pose to Erwin Haban on the Yahoo Haban forum site.

Probably no better place to do so!

 

I can see with all the little parts, pieces, plates, nuts & bolts, etc. that assemble this mechanical wonder and maze, its easy to understand how things got lost after several cycles of installation on and removal from a tractor, not to mention the odds of more missing stuff the more times one was sold and drug around and stored in numerous places and circumstances. If the person who removed it from the tractor wasn't attentive to detail in disassembly, and providing secure storage of all the goodies, it might quickly become an unusable implement.

Looks like your missing tube is a 'stepped" tube of some sort. Not sure of what that purpose might be. Seems like it would not have been designed and manufactured that way with no particular purpose, so it may relate to function or clearance.

It may, or may not, not be necessary to duplicate that feature.

The part is described in the exploded illustrated view as :  #8.   7625   Assy . - Mounting Tube

I believe he was going to attempt mount on an old sears garden tractor.

 

We do, normally May-September or so, we got hit pretty hard here with snow last winter, I think I put more gas through the gt14 blowing snow then cutting grass, this year has been pretty good though, ground is pretty much bare right now.

My friend Manny in Jeffersonville, Indiana just purchased a GT14 tractor with Haban 414 Sickle Bar Mower.    He sent me several pictures he took today of the Haban Mounted on the GT14.  

 

I asked him if I could post these on Red Square for the benefit of people who want to see how the Haban 414 Sickle Bar Mower is mounted.  

 

Some of these photos should assist you in you are missing parts or wanting to see how these were mounted to stablize all the vibration given off by this heavy sickle bar mower when in action.

We've never met but I know you are in Greencastle. 50 years ago this fall I was a student at DePauw.......for one year, then transferred back to home turf to attend Taylor University in Upland. A lot more parental supervision was required at that point in my life. TU straightened me out, I'm happy to say.

Its a pleasure to converse with a fellow Hoosier.

 

I'm the guy who put Manny (R.J.Manny) on to that CL listed GT 14 and Haban 414 in Crothersville, IN.....I think it was Sunday, maybe Monday, just after it was posted at Wheel Horse Garden Tractors and Parts Facebook page.

We started off messaging at the site, then shifted to email......a media format much more to my liking.

I knew he was looking for a GT 14 and had been to look at one in Evansville on Saturday, I think. That deal blew up, so he came home empty handed (the promises of the seller didn't hold up).

He knew of the GT 14 in Burlington, KY, just south of Cincinnati, and I understand he had talked with the seller, but hadn't gone to see it yet.

When I gave him the heads up about a tractor about 40 miles north of him, I could just about hear the tires screeching here in Gas City from the Ohio River as he zipped out on I-65 northbound to scope that GT 14 out.

I live about three hours north of Louisville/Jeffersonville, so the noise was quite noticeable. 

 

In my message to him, I emphasized the significance of the Haban mower with the deal, but made special alert of the MOUNTED HABAN on tractor. Rare, very rare indeed, anywhere......maybe not in the 70's, but certainly now. Pics, pics, and more pics......he probably thought I was a broken record going round and round.

 

Manny viewed the tractor on Tuesday, came to an agreement with the seller as to price, and then returned yesterday (Wednesday) to pick up the goodies. He emailed me a three word message on Tuesday, "I bought it!!!!!!!"

I also made him aware of my NY acquaintance Aldon, and related the details of Aldon's interest in a Haban, and that he needed help with details about the mounting since I knew of another Haban 414 for sale in NY for sale. It was very, very close to Aldon's location (unbelievably close for something so rare), but neither of the NY individuals knew the other, and didn't know one wanted to be a buyer of a Haban and the other wanted to be a seller of a Haban. With my intro, it only took them a matter of minutes to agree to a deal verbally, and it will be picked up this weekend. It was fun hooking them up for their own deal.

 

I'm thrilled Manny got this one. He's been chasing a GT 14 for long time and to find one so close was kinda one of those "barn find" moments. The fact he got one with amounted Haban, is frosting on the cake!

He was really looking for a GT 14 with a front end loader like the one in Classifieds right now, but wasn't positioned quite right for a deal of that size at the moment.

Manny's pics are fabulous!. He said he would send them to me, and may yet do so, but I'm fine with them being here already, since I would have reposted them anyway.

I don't know Manny plans for the mower.....whether he intends to flip it, or hang on to it. Either way he can probably answer some short term questions about the details of the mounting for all of us as they arise, especially in Aldon's case.

We  need Manny as a member here!  If he's here, I  haven't found him yet. Great guy, good writer, and a rabid Whee Horse fan, 24/7.

Manny's last pic which Lane posted, shows pretty clearly what goes on at the rear of the tractor, doesn't it?

Looks like there may be a rubber cushioner sandwiched in between the tube bracket and the hitch adapter to provide a little flex to the assembly, but maintains its general proper position.

All the pics should help you determine what you have and what you might be missing on Saturday when you pick your Haban up.

There's nothing like good pics to tell the real story.

Is you printer working well? Copies to take with you, might be very helpful for you and the seller to identify what is there.

The illustrated parts diagram would be a good reference the take along, also.

I'll push a little from my end to see if I can convince him.

The big thing is I think he operates only, or primarily, from a Smartphone (something I don't have, know little about, and have no desire to own).

Navigating this site from a smart phone (I don't even know if anyone can or does do that), would drive me bonkers.....the scrolling, expanding, reducing, tapping....... geeezzz.

I think its a generation thing.......I'm a old fart now.

I was educated on a keyboard in HS. Its ingrained in my synapses.....the electrical pathways were honed long ago, and short circuit doing something different. With my big mitts and huge fingers, I'd never get anywhere with a Smartphone.

 

Maybe that's part of the hang up......and he seems to be on a total, full on sprint, about 18-20 hours a day.

When you are moving around geographically a lot, a PC isn't gonna work, and a Smartphone may not really "get it" either, for this site.

Others can answer that question better than I can.

 

But with what he knows and his energy, he'd be a real positive force here at RS.

I have decided to officially declare this Wheel Horse GT 14/Haban Sickle Bar Mower Week.

I was partially involved in two deals separated by a considerable distance, in which two different GT 14s were bought by two different buyers and each deal included a Haban #414 sickle bar mower, one of them still mounted to the tractor.

One deal was in southern IN (the mounted mower tractor), and I helped with advice and research to assist the buyer with such things as information about opening the tow valve before pushing, sending pics highlighting critical points of the hydro to be aware of, and info about the rarity of the Haban, stressing the unique situation of finding an intact mounted mower, and the importance of documenting the physical installation for others. The buyer of that deal was Manny, of Jeffersonville. IN. He did his deal Tuesday 2/23.

 

Manny, ChaplainManny , is a newly registered member here and I'm sure will be a productive contributor.

 

The other deal involved Aldon whom many of you already know. At the very same time I learned of the southern IN, GT 14/ Haban deal, I had joined a couple of WH Facebook sites and while perusing for sale offerings at these sites, noted an almost two year old ad with a Haban #414 for sale in NY. I researched a bit further because of my awareness of Aldon's NY location. Interestingly enough, Aldon and the poster lived roughly 1 1/2 hours from each other. Aldon expressed he had a long term interest and curiosity about these sickle bar mowers and their rarity, commenting they tended to be rare even at WH shows and meets. I offered to see if I could touch base with the seller through Facebook, which I successfully did. With discussions by me with the seller and Aldon individually, by text and email, each agreed to exchange contact info and both gave me permission to serve as the intermediary to trade that info. Shortly, and I do mean very shortly after sending each the exchange of contact info, there was contact made between them, a deal was agreed on (mucho pronto), and today, 2/27,  Aldon picked up his rare mowing apparatus (rare in today's world of lawn and garden tractors).

I know that's going to be the only time in my life I was in on (in some capacity), the selling and buying of two GT 14s w/ Haban mowers in the same week. I thinking maybe no one else has done that.........except WH dealers in the '70's.

 

So, honor of this momentous week we will  celebrate with pics by Manny in posts to immediately follow.

I found a good short video of a Haban sickle bar in action  demonstrating its versatility, particular in specific hard to reach/mow situations.

This isn't a WH powering the mower, but it may well be a 414 or similar model.

"The Haban sickle bar mower has a four foot bar. During the Spring the ground is soft, and we can"t get close enough to mow all the grass. During the summer the ground is solid enough to mow all the way to the water"s edge. The mower does a good job, and it sure beats weedeating."
