Need help with PTO alignment

Recommended Posts

OK I need some more help, I am re installing the PTO bracket, the rod housing is at least an inch to the right on top? I thought the only thing I could have done is mounted the engine in the wrong holes but that is not it I mounted them on the furthest I could forward? I am stumped is the rod housing supposed to be on an angle or straight up and down?

You didn't take any pictures of the tractor before you started tearing it apart? Shame on you! Do you have the Parts List for the tractor? In the absence of pictures you took, the Parts List diagrams will wind up being your best friend. If the engine is installed in the right location the front flange should be about as far forward as the rear of the front axle. The image below should help.

Thanks Mike the engine is installed in the correct holes, and the Model is c121  yes I did take some pictures and I have every diagram available with papers all over my garage:) this is the problem now I have everything lined up correctly and the  hair pin for the bottom of the arm is at least a quarter inch too high, I cant get the arm to drop low enough to install the hairpin, if I install the pin first I cant get the hairpin to go either?

I should probably go out and take a look at my C141 but it is raining now.  That being said, did you try putting the trunion in thru the bottom and the hairpin on the top?  I don't know why, but some of my tractors have the hairpin on top and others on the bottom and it seems to depend on where the spring (see Mikes RJ pix above) is attached.  Send us a pix, it may help to diagnose your problem

Well if I just left it without the hairpin that would be doing the same thing as reversing it  since there is no hole up top for a hairpin, I am not sure why this is not lining up but it is a quarter inch high does anyone see a problem leaving the hairpin out since I see no way that bar could ever come out of there when everything is tight?

I can't see anything that would keep you from putting the hair pin in. If you remove the roll pin and clevis from the loop it's off set the roll pin should be at the bottom. If that is upside down I can see it not lining up with the PTO pulley.

C-121? Your engine is mounted on a shaker plate, correct? That mount will not look like MikeRJ's as his is a solid mount.

Sorry I dont have great pictures, but here are two that may help. (Be sure to click through to "Full Size" as they are BIG pictures, you should be able to zoom in a good bit)

OK, thanks for the pictures, I think I see what is wrong the pin goes above not below?? What is that pin doing except stopping the bar from going down.

At the bottom? That pin just stops the bar from going down. If you pull the pin, you can slide the hoop down and out to remove the pto belt.

Although, you dont HAVE to take the hoop off to change the belt... I think its just an easy way to remove it.

Thanks everyone, one more question how do you remove the black plastic throttle and choke handles from the cables? I want to redo the plate

Someone may have a better way than me, but they just pull off. Warm them up with a hair drier and then just pull firmly and slowly.

We have a vendor that sells replacement handles should you need them, in the vendors section look for Glenn Pettit's restoration parts.

What Bob just said.  I used the hammer technique once, worked very nicely.
