Rosco 11 #1 Posted July 26, 2015 I have a c160 A all the transmission fluid leaked out on both sides of the axles I heard a snapping sound before this happen can anybody help me and tell me what my problem iswas able to drive the tractor back to the shed
pfrederi 17,642 #2 Posted July 26, 2015 If you could drive it back to the shed not all the hydro fluid leaked out. Had there been signs of leakage previously? Jack the rear up and rotate one tire..does the other wheel turn in the opposite direction??..hear an snapping noises??
skrusins 128 #3 Posted July 27, 2015 It sounds like the needle bearing to me
Rosco 11 #4 Posted July 27, 2015 No there were no signs of any leaks prior to this but my son said he was backing it up and he thinks he might have had the parking brake engaged . I will try jacking it up in the AM THANKS
pfrederi 17,642 #5 Posted July 27, 2015 If he engaged the parking brake while moving teh snapping noise may have been the parking pawl grinding on the gear...or breaking. Doesn't explain the sudden leakage out of both axles
Rosco 11 #6 Posted October 24, 2015 Pulled the axles seals the needle bearing are bad is there any one who know were to find the ax\e bearings for a c160 A model 1-0481Toro said they are not available. will i need to split the case to replace them if i can find them Toro # 1526thanks Rosco
rmaynard 15,417 #7 Posted October 24, 2015 That number crosses over to a Torrington B-1816. Search Amazon.com. You should be able to get them for around $8.00 including S&H.
stevasaurus 22,698 #8 Posted October 24, 2015 (edited) Yes, you will need to split the case to replace the bearings. Might as well get the seals...SKF 11050 edited:: This seal is for the 8 speed manual trannys...not the hydros. Bob is right below. rmaynard 15,417 #9 Posted October 24, 2015 Yes, you will need to split the case to replace the bearings. Might as well get the seals...SKF 11050 Steve, doesn't the Toro/Wheel Horse 6449 seal cross to SKF 11124?
rmaynard 15,417 #10 Posted October 24, 2015 And also, the 6449 is still available from Toro.
stevasaurus 22,698 #11 Posted October 25, 2015 You are correct Bob...Thanks. I was looking at the WH# 1213/100443 seal for the manual 8 speeds. Sorry.
Rosco 11 #12 Posted October 26, 2015 All thanks for your help bearings are on order should have them tomorrow. This could be the first of many questions to follow can I split the transaxle with it still mounted on the tractor. Or will I be making more work for myself
stevasaurus 22,698 #13 Posted October 26, 2015 No...you have to take the trans off the frame and put it on a bench. There should be a manual for doing the hrdro....but you do have to pull the trans.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,029 #14 Posted October 26, 2015 Here is the Sundstrand service manualhttp://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/24-transmission-hydro-sundstrand-sm-492-4206pdf/This tractor service manual also has removal instructions in section 5. Although for a different year the info applies because the C-Series changed very little.http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/4634-tractor-1979-b-c-d-series-auto-sm-wiring-810063r1pdf/Garry
dtallon 320 #15 Posted October 27, 2015 It might be easier with the trans removed, but you can do it with one side still attached to the tractor. Your issues sound very similar to what I had to deal with on my C-160.http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/49552-new-challenge-a-74-c-160/#comment-454239As I posted there at the end, the trans gasket has been discontinued since I did my C-160. I made my own gasket for a subsequent project out of 1/64 gasket material that is kind of like felt paper (Mr. Gasket 9610 fiber sheet). I have tried it twice now on my latest project, and still have a slow drip from it. Not sure if there is a small crack somewhere, or the material just wicks a small amount of Trans fluid to make it drip. The Toro gasket I got for the C-160 was more like paper, so I might try a different material for the next one I do. Also, while you are in there do anything that might be suspect. It was my RH bearing that was bad, but my LH looked and felt OK. Last time I ran the C-160 I heard some creaking coming from the LH hub, so I'm thinking maybe the LH bearing isn't as OK as I thought it was. Oh well, at least I know what to expect if I have to go back in there. Dave

pfrederi 17,642 #25 Posted October 31, 2015 That doesn't look good. Sorry. What does the parking pawl look like I do not see it in the picture. That much damage I think you should probably go ahead on look inside the hydro motor and pump. There is strong likelyhood that a lot of the metal bits got through the suction screen (it only gets the big chunks). Those bits will seriously damage the hydro pump and motor. Would be ashame to get it back together and find the hydro is weak....
