310-8 PTO

Recommended Posts

My grandma just called me and said she was mowing in wet grass a few days ago and her belts stopped turning. I'm hoping she just got the blades slowed down enough to clog them up and stop and threw a belt or something. I've never really worked on the PTO on this tractor. Can you guys give me some kind of idea of the steps I should take to diagnose the problem? Are parts for the PTO still available if she broke something? Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk

You say you've never worked on this PTO...(as well as checking the blades for wet grass buildup) its probably time to take the PTO bell off, give it a small smear of grease on the roller bearings and put it back together with a turn or two of the trunion(sp) to increase the clutch pressure. This assuming you don't take the bell off and find the clutch facing destroyed.

Check the simple stuff first. Mainly the belt tension from the PTO to the deck. Also the spindle belt. Is the deck tensioner moving freely? Basically work back from the deck and verify that everything is OK. Check the PTO adjustment. Marginal can become no-workie with excessively wet grass. If you don't have the manual download it here. And yes, servicing the PTO would be an excellent idea.

Also make sure you don't get grease on the mating surfaces.

Are you referring to the owners manual or a service manual? She still has the owners manual from when she bought new in 1986. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk

Make sure the operator manual she has is this one.

The low engine oil switch was new in 1986 and the oil capacity was changed so the earlier manual #810399R1 is not correct.

There is no service manual for the tractor. There is one for the Kohler engine and one for the transmission if you ever need them.

This old service manual the 1978-79 B, C and D-Series has info that is still correct for the 300-Series. The C-Series became the 300-Series.

Mower decks have their own manuals for each model/width of cut.
37" 2-blade deck operator manual that uses a 6-sided drive belt

Not necessarily the model of deck you have but the installation will be the same.

Thank you for the links! It was as I hoped. The deck was clogged up and the belt off the PTO. A little cleaning and reinstalled the belt and she was mowing again. I have new deck wheels and bolts on the way so when I go over there to put them on I'll service the PTO. It looked like it was well past due. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk

Sounds like you have things under control, which is great to hear.  The 310-8 is a real nice tractor and should last a very long time as long as you stay up on the maintenance.

I was just looking back at some of your earlier threads, just wondering if you got the choke cable you were looking for?

I have an original but well-used Parts & Service Manual for that tractor (Part No. 810405R1).  I don't believe it's in our manuals section here on RedSquare, but if you're ever confused about what parts to buy, send me a PM or start another thread, and I'll see if I can help you out.  I've been telling myself to scan and upload my copy to here for about two years now, but at 100 pages or so it's not going to happen any time soon, sorry. :hide:

That manual also has a section at the back called "Service Information", with information you won't find in the owner's manual.  I'm more likely to find time to upload those 14 pages.

--------

EDIT:  My parts manual lists 110713 as the correct choke cable for your 310-8.
